Launching of the 39th Edition
On Thursday 15 January 2015, Dr Toni Sant, Artistic Director of the St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, launched the 39th edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu which will be held on Saturday 21 March 2015 in Sir Temi Zammit Theatre at the University of Malta. Dr Sant said that the Centre for Creativity will start working with the organizing committee of L-Għanja tal-Poplu so that the Festival continues to flourish for the benefit of the Maltese song.
Valletta 2018 Foundation Chairman Mr Jason Micallef attended the occasion and announced that L-Għanja tal-Poplu will be an integral part of the activities of Valletta 2018. Moreover, as Chairman of One, he said it is to his great satisfaction that for the past previous years, the festival was transmitted live on One Television, although he believes such an event should have a place on the national station.
L-Għanja tal-Poplu Chairman Mr Charles Schembri thanked Dr Sant, Mr Micallef and the Malta Arts Fund for their help. He also thanked PBS Chairman Mr Tonio Portugese for resuming the broadcasting of l-Għanja tal-Poplu on the national station; the transmission of the festival's final night on 1 April, and a further live weekly programme about the festival on Radju Malta 2. Mr Schembri also thanked composers, authors, musicians and singers for their works throughout the history of the festival.
Mr Tony Micallef made an intervention about his experience in the media as a follower of L-Għanja tal-Poplu and as media co-ordinator for this edition.
The evening included some music too. Karen Debattista sang 'Jien Ma’ Naħdimx’, L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2014 winning song, and Frank O'Neil, Christabelle Curmi and Lajks group performed songs from past Għanja tal-Poplu editions.
The Poster
Designed by Jimmy Grima, the poster for this edition shows a scene of Valletta, the place where the festival started from. It also shows a boat, which symbolizes the progress made from year to year while the musician symbolizes the importance of live music during the festival. The red colour symbolizes the Maltese song's boiling blood, an action which in three short minutes reflects history, arouses emotion and produces a local melody.
