L-Għanja tal-Poplu (People's Ode Song Contest) is a quasi-annual festival of original songs in Maltese.

This song contest of Maltese pop and contemporary folk has been organized by the Youth Travel Circle (YTC) since 1973. It took place every year for a fifth consecutiv years, until 1987, attracting mainly YTC members who were singer-songwriters, Initially the Festival was restricted for YTC members. Since 1987.

But the Festival was not held in 1988 and 1989. And after a 2 years hiatus it returned with new rules, which opened it up to singers and songwriters who are not YTC members. The Festival was held on a national level, allowing the participation of authors, composers, and singers from outside the YTC as long as they write and sing in the Maltese language.

From 1990 onwards it became an annual national music event, missing a contest in 1991 and 2011 mainly due to lack of funding from sponsors. In the nineties it the festival started being transmitted on local television stations.

From 2008 the Festival return back the his roots, and the singers taken part, were singer-songwriters.

As from 2013 various local radio stations started transmitting special programmes dedicated to this festival. It is also supported by the Malta Arts Fund of the Government of Malta.

From 2015 at his 39th edition the festival the St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity led by Dr.Toni Sant will start work with the organizing committee of the L-Għanja tal-Poplu to the Festival continues to flourish and to promote Maltese song.

  • The 11th Edition was held on Saturday 14 May 1983 at the Grand Ballroom Hotel Phoenicia, Floriana.
  • The 15th Edition was held on Sunday 29 November 1987 at the University of Malta's Sir Temi Zammit Hall in Msida.
  • The 18th Edition was held on Saturday 22 May 1993 at the Oratory at Birkirkara.
  • The 20th Edition was held on Saturday 22 April 1995 at the University of Malta's Sir Temi Zammit Hall in Msida.
  • The 21st Edition was held on Saturday 20 April 1996 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.

  • The 36th Edition of the festival took place on Saturday 21 April 2012 at the University of Malta's Sir Temi Zammit Hall at Tal-Qroqq in Msida.
  • The 37th Edition took place on 20 April 2013 at the University of Malta's Sir Temi Zammit Hall at Tal-Qroqq in Msida.
