Early Years

Heathcliff Balzan

Heathcliffe Balzan, born on the 10 of September, 1978 in a family of four. Lived in Floriana till the age of 24 until he got married, now living in Naxxar together with his wife and child.

Heathcliffe received his primary education at St. Francis School in l-Imsida and his secondary education at St. Michael’s school in Qormi. He finalised his tertiary studies at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary which at that time acted as well as a sixth form.


Heathcliffe’s true love was always music, since the very early age of 4, started attending private piano and theory lessons. He furthered his studies with various established Musical directors, with the likes of Mro. Raymond Zammit FLCM & Mro. Raymond Sciberras FLCM.

After completing his classical studies & going well into his teens, Heathcliffe developed the ear and love for Jazz music, which led him to study with Mro. Dominic Galea, a much acclaimed Jazz pianist & musician.

As a Musician himself, Heathcliffe is an established pianist, composer and concert organiser, mainly in the local Pop & Jazz scene, working with Malta’s established singers with the likes of Glen Vella, Eleanor Cassar, Petra Zammit and many more. In 2005 he composed the signature tune for one of Malta’s most popular teleserials Gizelle - Memorji Mbikkma, sung by Eleanor Cassar, which led him to win his first honour in his career for best original song, during The Malta Television awards. During the following years he composed songs together with author Deo Grech, for Petra Zammit – Rakkont ta’ Omm earning the runner up prize during the festival L-Għanja tal-Poplu and Forget My Name together with Natasha Turner, also sung by Petra which earned another runner up prize during Malta Summer Hit Song Contest. Lately he composed the song Rise together with Deo Grech, a song which is being used as a signature tune by Rise foundation a philantropic organisation. Amazingly, this song got so much popularity it infact rose to third place for 3 consecutive weeks in Malta’s Top 20 charts.

zone5ive BAND - Wedding Band & Concerts

Heathcliffe Balzan, with now over 20 years of experience in the Music / entertainment scene, has paved and set new standards to the Maltese Wedding Industry since only 14 years of age. Today, together with his band zone5ive, and a portfolio of established singers, he plays during wedding receptions and corporate events. Consulting couples and being also the pianist / keyboardist in the band, is his professional day job. [www.zone5band.com]

As a Concert Organiser, Heathcliffe is responsible for organizing and directing the past two show stopping concerts by zone5ive BAND. The first one being Eleanor A Voice and the second and most recent one back in 2012 Queen Of The Night - A Live tribute to Whitney Houston.

Recalling some moments of his most prestigious events in his career, Heathcliffe had the opportunity to play for Pope Benedict XVI back in November 2011 together with a local popular brass band at The Vatican, followed by another opportunity to play an hour set with famous Italian singer Riccardo Cocciante. He also managed to perform in front of the President Emeritus of Malta, his Excellency Hon. Dr George Abela at his residence.

Vilhena Concert Band

Since 2013, Heathcliffe occupies the post of Musical Director with the Vilhena Concert Band – Vilhena Band Club - Floriana. In the club’s glorious 140 years history, he is the youngest musical director. His first debut with the concert band, dates back in 2014, a concert commemorating the club’s 140 years anniversary. The band conducted by Heathcliffe was formed from 40 musicians and a choir of 35 choristers. The latest success by the Vilhena Concert Band happened on the 7 of February 2015, during a classical sacred Concert at The Floriana Parish Church. For the first time in its history, the church hosted over a thousand seated people during ‘Concerto di Musica Sacra’ by World renowned Tenor, Friar Alessandro Brustenghi, accompanied by the Vilhena concert band. Heathcliffe wrote the musical scores for the concert and also directed the Band.

Heathcliffe’s aspirations to the future are, to continue doing what he loves best, which is to make music and performing alongside zone5ive BAND.
