Launching of the festival
L-Għanja tal-Poplu (2021) 45 Edition. A strong partecipation for the 45th edition of The People's Anthem.
The L-Għanja tal-Poplu Committee thanks the Maltese song artists for their great interest in the festival as a total of 178 songs were received for the first phase of the L-Għanja tal-Poplu eliminatory - Maltese Song Festival, now in its 45th edition. The jury has a tough job selecting the 40 songs that will qualify for the second stage of the semifinals.
The songs presented in the first phase had to be accompanied by an instrument or two. This will allow the jury to better judge the basic words and melody. As last year, in the first phase the jurors are paying more attention to the words, with the aim of improving the lyrics of the Maltese song. Therefore, at the beginning of last February, the L-Għanja tal-Poplu Committee organized a webinar in collaboration with the Department of Maltese of the University of Malta, for Maltese song artists. At the webinar, ideas on how to improve songwriting were discussed. The speakers were Professor Manwel Mifsud, Mr. Trevor Zahra, Dr. Michael Spagnol, Ms. Leanne Ellul and Ms. Sephora Francalanza.
The second round of the selection, the semi-finals, will take place in mid-May. This time the accompaniment of the songs must be similar to that desired in the final production and a singer can sing up to one song. Afterwards the finalist songs are announced.
The final evening of the 45th edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu will be held on the 7th of August 2021 in Pjazza Teatru Rjal with the musical accompaniment of the Malta Concert Orchestra, always according to the health rules. . This will be the fifth time that the Malta Concert Orchestra, composed of 40 musicians, will be accompanying the singers live in L-Għanja tal-Poplu - Maltese Song Festival.
This festival is organized by the L-Għanja tal-Poplu committee in collaboration with the Malta Concert Orchestra and Pjazza Teatru Rjal. Għanja tal-Poplu is assisted by the Malta Council for the Arts and the Valletta Cultural Agency.
