L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2005

The 30th edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu was held on Friday 15 April 2005 at the Audio Vision Studios in Ħamrun broadcast live on PBS during Xarabank presented by Peppi Azzopardi.

94 original songs were submitted, shortlisted to 40 songs by a jury panel, and shortlisted again to 18 finalists by a different jury.

Tickets at €10 were available from the Y.T.C. 227 Merchants' Street, Valletta.

Recognition

The committee has always been proud to recognise the talent of local artists and therefore, special awards were given to Gaetano Buttigieg, well known as Gaetano Kanta, and singers Joe Grech and Freddie Portelli.

The committee have always put a lot of emphasis on the language and therefore, lyrics are always of the essence in this competition and this was seen within the choice of the jury for the evening, composed of scholars within the linguistics and literary field. This gifts was presented by Dr.Josie Muscat the chairman of Eden Foundation because all the profits from tickets and sponsors at the contest were donated to the Eden Foundation.

  • For Best Social Theme: Sħiebi Fil-Cupboard Tal-Kċina – Walter Micallef (Written and composer by Walter Micallef).
  • For Best Arragment: Riflessi – by Mariella Cassar ans Fabrizio Georgio.
  • For Best Interpretation: Joe Demicoli for the song – Lampa Stampa

Vote counting was shown on screen and for the first time the jury voted for 50% of the final result while the remaining 50% depended on televoting.
