Emil Calleja Bayliss

Emil Calleja Bayliss from San Ġwann, Malta was born on the 23 of June 1989.

He is a relatively new author to the local music scene. He has always been interested in the local industry and from a very young age showed interest in following what was happening around him.

Writing has always been a passion for him and in fact he has written a number of articles for escmalta.com, escflashmalta.com and even il-Gwida Magazine. Another passion of his is poetry and slowly the love towards the literary genre turned into songwriting.

In fact, those who are close to him can vouch that his love for poetry was always derived from the love he had towards music and always expressed his wish that his poetry writing will one day turn into songwriting. Slowly, the dream was realized when he wrote his first set of lyrics for an event at the University of Malta. On this occassion he worked with Jean Claude Vancell and Jessika and from then on, he tried his best to take every opportunity that came his way.

Nowadays, he sees the difference between the two genres but appreciates both forms of writing. Art in general is a passion of his, in fact of of his side hobbies is photography and it is not the first time that he managed to combine the two areas together. In 2012 he participated in the first competition in the form of L-Għanja Tal-Poplu and from then on he never looked back. In fact after this participation, in the next two years he managed to reach the finals of all local competitions and managed to be successful in a number of them.

Although still at a relatively young age and quite new to the scene, Emil is establishing himself as a lyricist. Slowly, he would like to keep working on this and work with different people as he believes that each experience is a learning experience and every step is important.

Emil Calleja Bayliss, from San Ġwann, Malta born on 23 June, 1989.

Relatively young author to the local music scene. He was always interested in the local music scene and from a very young age showed interest in following what was happening around him.

One of his main passions is writing and he is an editor on the website escflashmalta.com which aims to promote local talent, previously he was also an editor on escmalta.com. One of his main passions was poetry, and the main aim behind was the dream that one day he gets to write songs.

Slowly, the dream was realized when he wrote his first set of lyrics for an event at the University of Malta. On this occassion he worked with Jean Claude Vancell and Jessika. From then on, he tried his best to take every opportunity that came his way. In 2012, his song Tal-Komma Twila made the finals of L-Għanja Tal-Poplu – the song was a composition of Dario Bezzina and sung by his sister Grecia Bezzina. The team struck the right chord together as on their first venture they managed to finish in second place.

In 2013, Emil made it to the finals of L-Għanja Tal-Poplu with two songs. This time round one was co-written with Rita Pace who also sung the entry Pupazz which managed to finish in third place and also had the song Għal Dejjem a composition of Mark Scicluna, with an interpretation of Marie Claire Attard Bason.

After managing to pass to the finals of this prestigious festivals, next up was the Konkors Kanżunetta Indipendenża were once again Emil managed to make it to the finals with two songs. The first was a composition of Philip Vella, to Danica Muscat’s interpretation and the second one was the song Riflessi a composition of Mark Sciluna to Karen DeBattista’s interpretation. Albeit, not winning any awards, the songs were both well received and the feedback on both of them was really encouraging. He also had a song amongst the semi-finalists of the category for new talent entitled Dil-Fjura Għalik which was sung Naomi Roberts to Kaya’s composition.

The latest succes for Emil, comes alongside Mark Scicluna, who slowly the two are forming a dynamic team. Together they managed to reach the final of the International Festival of Maltese Song with number Poeta Bla Kliem sung by the talented Mark Tonna and the song went on to achieve the second place, just three points behind the winner, Olivia Lewis.

Late in November, the team found out that their composition Safe has made it through to the semi-finals of the Malta Eurovision. This will be the first team, either of them are appearing as songwriters in the biggest festival on the island. The song they are presenting will be interpreted by Miriam Christine who has already represented Malta back in 1996. The song was well received and a lot of experts in the industry along with journalists and Eurovision fans were shocked when it failed to make it to Saturday’s show.

In 2014, Emil managed to make his third appearance in L-Għanja Tal-Poplu with two songs. The first one being Mara sung by Marie Claire Attard Bason and composed by Andrew Zammit and the second one being Djarju ta’ Tifkiriet sung by Simone Gauci and composed by Mark Spiteri Lucas. It was the first time, Emil worked with these two composers and together managed to make it with the final sixteen from seventy-one submitted entries for the competition.

2014 also saw Calleja Bayliss competing in the inagural edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza Junior 2014 where he had three songs in the final. One of the songs he presented was called Festa T’Ilwien sung by Destiny Chukunyere and it finished in third place – this song was a composition of Mark Spiteri Lucas. One of the other songs he presented Damma was a composition of Dominic Cini 'Minik' and it was sung by Naomi Busuttil – this managed to win the Public Vote. Whilst the third song he presented Rakkont sung by Rutger Scicluna Galea & Kylie Meilak to the composition of Gillian Attard finished in 5th Place.

After the Junior competition, Emil was also comepting in the senior competition. He presented three entries within the New Talent section. The entries were: Inservi sung by Kurt Cassar to the composition of Elton Zarb & Gillian Attard, Nisġa sung by Josepha Cumbo and Kieku Taf by Sebastian Calleja – both compositions of 'Minik'. Inservi and Nisġa went on to reach the finals and both songs finsihed within the top ten with Inservi winning the New Talent Section of the competition. The other song presented by Calleja Bayliss was the song Stmerrejtek Ħabbejtek a composition of Mark Scicluna and interpreted by Marie Claire Attard Bason. The song finished in 6th place and the feedback on the entry and the performance of Attard Bason was exceptional.

Another experience came in the Summer Hit Song Contest 2014, the contest returned after a three year absense and the fifth edition was possibly the most successful edition of them all. Emil competed for the very first time with three entries – these were Back to... by Domenique Azzopardi a composition of Mark Scicluna, Hourglass by Simone Gauci a composition of Rita Pace and The Joke Is On You a composition of Elton Zarb. Back to... emerged as the winner of the competition in a tight race whilst the other two songs ended in the top ten. The was another success for the Scicluna / Calleja Bayliss duo who are slowly becoming a permanent fixture as team in local festivals.

Another experience in Calleja Bayliss’ bag will be the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014-2015 – he reached the finals as an author of this prestigious event for the second year running. These time round he will be competing with two songs; 12, Baker Street composed by Jan Van Dijck to the interpretation of Karen DeBattista and Close Your Eyes a composition of Elton Zarb and interpreted by Danica Muscat.

Although still at a relatively young age and quite new to the scene, Emil is establishing himself as a lyricist. Slowly, he would like to keep working on this and if possibly work with different people as each experience is a learning experience and every step is important.
