Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2003

Malta's representative for the first Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be chosen during a show to be held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on 5 September 2003.

Children aged between eight and 15 will perform 10 songs which have been selected from 49 submissions. The event will be broadcast live on TVM at 8.30 p.m.

The winner will represent Malta in the children's version of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen on 15 November 2003.

The local contest is being organised by Public Broadcasting Services and the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts.

Details of the contest were given yesterday by Antonella Vassallo, the show's executive producer for PBS, Paul Mifsud, the council's executive director, and PBS TV director Frans Lia at a news conference.

Making it to the final night is no mean feat since the rules stipulate that the writers and composers of the song must also be children, using no professional help.

The winning artist, composer and author will be awarded a trophy offered by Victor Azzopardi Jewellers. The voting will be split equally between televoting and a jury.

The highlight of the evening will be a performance by Bradley McIntosh, the British former singer of S Club 7. Other international acts include the group L13, Lyndze B, as well as singer Steve Cole.

Local acts include the Junior Choir of Ray Mangion's Act React ; Sophie & Yasmine; The Junior YADA Dance Company, as well as Mitchel & Jessica, Malta's own Latin American dance champions.

The show will be presented by popular TV personality Annalise Ellul, while the set was designed by 22-year-old Elisa Camilleri.

Organised by the European Broadcasting Union, the two-hour Junior Eurovision will see 15 countries taking part: Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, FYR Macedonia, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom.

The result will be decided by international televoting, and the winning song will be released internationally by EMI. International stars Robbie Williams, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears are expected to perform during the show.

Tickets for Malta's show, ranging from Lm5 to Lm7.50 can be obtained from the MCC or Caesar's Cafè in Portomaso.
