Jonathan Laferla

Jonathan’s television career started when in 1998 he was asked by Head of Education 22 channel, Charles Xuereb, to present, together with Antoinette Camilleri, then Jonathan’s fiancèe a religious slot in children’s programme Oops!. The next year this was repeated in another children’s programme Ħaj!, this time teaming with producer Carmel Serracino, with Jonathan interpreting different Biblical characters being ‘interviewed’ in the studio. That year this team also produced a short film on the life of Dun Ġorġ Preca.

In September 2000, once again targeting the young audience, Jonathan, Carmel and Antoinette came up with the idea of giving life to Maltese folklore character Ġaħan filming short slots portraying the life of the Ġaħan family during children’s programme Scooter which was also aired on national station TVM. Jonathan and Antoinette acted Ġaħan’s parents while Jonathan’s younger brother Josef was roped in as Ġaħan This comic and educational mix proved to be an enormous success, even landing the BA award as best children’s programme. Scooter was on again the following year, this time Jonathan acting out different characters from children’s classics and presenting the one hour weekly programme with Antoinette and Josef.

From 2002 till 2006 Jonathan and his now wife Antoinette continued producing and presenting weekly educational programmes, now aimed for adolescents on Education 22, the last, incidentally, being like the first, another religious programme Mixegħla.

During this time Jonathan started acting in local teleserials, starting with Wenzu u Rożi in 2002, then in the role of Pawlu in Is-Salib tal-Fidda (2002-03), the murdered brother in Delitti f’Malta (2003) and the bishop’s priest in It-tfal Jiġu Bil-Vapuri (2005-2007).

In 2005 Jonathan debuted at the cinemas in Anġli the Movie. Jon then played other roles in In–Numru 9 and Il-Mera before returning to the cinemas in Santa Monika in 2009.

Between 2010 and 2012 Jonathan played two other priestly roles in Riħ Isfel and F’Salib it-Toroq. In 2013, Jonathan was Mikein Pierre Portelli’s Iċ-Ċaqqufa, probably Malta’s most watched TV series. Another season followed in 2014-2015. In 2015-2016 Jonathan appeared in Libra, in the daily series Tereza and a minor role in Strada Stretta. DM Media producers of Libra are currently filming another series Pupazz, which will see Jonathan in a major role.

Jonathan also featured as an actor in numerous adverts (such as Air Malta, Melita, Chef Choice)and promotional spots on TV such as three government initiatives (the launch of e-government, a new sexual harassment law, and a new law defending the right of the victim to be present in court hearings), the Sedqa advert promoting help for employees drug addicts and the recent spot during the bicycle marathon promoting the use of defribilators in schools, among others.

Jonathan also ventured in the musical scene, co-producing with colleague and musician Jimmy Bonnici a live rendition of songs from Jesus Christ Superstar by students at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School in 2014.

In the same year he wrote the lyrics for the song Rutina, which made it to the finals of local music festival L-Għanja tal-Poplu. In 2017 he acted in, and directed the music video for TACT’s instrumental song All is True.
