I'm writing this to test whether you'll get a note at the top of your screen notifying you that you get a "You have new messages" through a banner like the one we saw together on Wikipedia the other day. According to the MediaWiki documentation, this is an out of the box feature and no extension is required...but I'm not sure whether it's actually turned on by default.
