Technical Considerations

Logging in (settled)

Is it possible to have a 'logging in / sign up' on the front page ( --Tony Grimaud(talk) 22:02, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

This is an excellent idea! Why didn't I think of this?  :-) Let see if Darren would rather do it himself or whether I should just go ahead and do it. --Toni Sant (talk) 12:07, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
ditto. It's now on my radar Stephensd 16:30, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Login/register basic link now on front page Stephensd 23:15, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Short URLs (settled)

How do we make the URLs for individual pages shorter/prettier? --Toni Sant (talk) 17:51, 20 October 2010 (UTC) Sorted by User:Stephensd. --Toni Sant (talk) 11:01, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Appear to be working. Install seems to have caused few if any issues. If you do find some, let me know Stephensd 10:47, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
That's great! Thanks. We're now at the beginning of a new era. :-) --Toni Sant (talk) 10:58, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Special characters (settled)

  • We need to add a list of special characters (esp. Maltese letters) in the edit page. - Toni Sant (talk)
My initial choice of embedded font for the body didn't help; there may have been some of the more common ISO-8859-1 chars missing. I've changed that default font now, to use more consistent browser fonts. This should help. Stephensd 15:01, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
  • We need to make sure that we address the use of Maltese characters, especially in names, in the help section on the style guidelines page, which will perhaps be a sub-page/section on the editorial policy --Toni Sant (talk) 12:41, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
I think the best and easier way for the contributors is to have the Maltese characters (ċ ġ ħ ż) displayed as buttons along side the Bold and Italic buttons on top of the text fields, if that is at all possibility. Tony Grimaud(talk) 21:18, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
It's good to have this sort of stuff where it's visible but I haven't seen an iteration with them at the top on the tool bar. --Toni Sant (talk) 06:57, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
We now have this facility just below the 'Save' button 'edit' and 'file upload' pages. It's not an ideal location, but at least it's there and we can revisit the location of this function under 'Look & Feel' in due course. --Toni Sant (talk) 17:25, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Error pages (settled)

What's the best sort of 404 page we can have? - Toni Sant (talk)

I've put a (basic) m3p 404 page in place Stephensd 15:01, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
They're looking great. Thanks! --Toni Sant (talk) 19:41, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Media uploads

This issue is now being actively handled through the M3P:To Do list.

Rogue users? (settled through MW upgrade in 2015)

I have purged a bunch more spam bot regs today. Most of them yahoo. for a little while I have added yahoo to the banned list for new registrations (shouldn't affect existing users), until I can look at revisiting the captcha stuff, which may need an upgrade to a new system (and some code install at the server). Meanwhile we can monitor the numb rod requests coming in. Stephensd (talk) 16:33, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

It looks like most of the rest have a .ru extention in the email addresses. Could we add *.ru to the banned list too, at least temporarily? --Toni Sant (talk) 07:11, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Here is a list of users currently considered as potential rogues:

If your username is on this list and you want to verify that you're a bone fide user, just let us know what contributions you're planning to make to the M3P, right here on this talk page. --Toni Sant (talk) 09:53, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

I have now added config settings that prevent blocked users form logging in, and require them to have confirmed their email address before being allowed to edit. See [[1]] for details

Have added extension SpamBlacklist, and have begun a local blacklist in addition to the one used by the extension itself Stephensd 15:23, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Hmmm. A couple more appeared overnight, so it looks like the extension settings will need tweaking a touch. Done a little more today but will have to keep an eye out... Stephensd 16:25, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

    • I may have found an administrative solution to the rush of malicious account creations. After some hacking about I have installed a new extension which makes purge blocking mass creations so much easier. Together with the other measures in place, we may now be able to get on top of it. I just removed the last couple of days worth of crud in around 10 mins... Stephensd (talk) 19:54, 3 September 2012 (EDT)

OK, more work on spammer accounts. I have just configured the Bad Behaviour extension to query the Honeypot blacklist, added to the SpamBlacklist extension blacklist domains and have looked at slimming down the bannedips list that we were using (mainly by trying something similar in structure but adding as I go). Te original was very effective but something of a memory killer for PHP, so we can't really use that. Stephensd (talk) 14:30, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Help pages to create

Refering Pages

Is there a way we can direct a search made about a person known by slight differences in their name to the same page? As it is at the moment, say; "Tony Grimaud" , "Grimaud", "il-Grimaud" ... they all would point to separate pages. at best, it tells you that no page had been found. moreover, it encourages you to start creating such a page. This produces undesirable multiple pages for the same person/entry--Tony Grimaud(talk) 12:56, 7 October 2010 (UTC).

My first suggestion would be that we grab the contents of the Wikipedia page on redirects and start adapting it for our needs. --Toni Sant (talk) 16:19, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
I have been trying my hands at refering pages with some notable success! :) ...Now i would like to share this info with the rest of the world...where would be the best place to write this, ie in the Help pages? there an admin login to do so--Tony Grimaud(talk) 12:56, 8 October 2010 (UTC)?
A help page on this topic would be helpful for other editors seeking to create internal redirect pages. --Toni Sant (talk) 13:03, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
I have created a help page on this topic. --Toni Sant (talk) 14:47, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

Could the signiture function be disabled when editing the main pages ... as it is in wikipedia? Tony Grimaud(talk) 12:35, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

This probably needs an advanced version of the editing interface to be enabled through an extensions. So, it's probably one to discuss with Darren. --Toni Sant (talk) 16:22, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm actually rather keen to get an automated version of the signature in place too for all new users, but perhaps this is a default function in more recent versions of MediaWiki than the one we're currently running. --Toni Sant (talk) 13:03, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
I believe that this issue has been settled. --Toni Sant (talk) 07:59, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Lost in migration

Hosting Migration

I'm working on this: (a) to resolve the timeout issue on uploading large files, and (b) to kick-start a longer term plan for technical considerations on the project. --Toni Sant (talk) 16:55, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

This issue needs further attention as commercial shared hosting means also potentially not being able to update to the latest MediaWiki version whenever needed. --Toni Sant (talk) 13:31, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Hosting was migrated successfully in summer of 2015. --Toni Sant (talk) 08:17, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Admins can no longer protect/unprotect a page
  • Admins cannot edit a protected page
Users in the administrators group should have the protect right enabled (group permissions are enabled for this). I have had to add the edit protect right as well, which might help, so check and let me know if this has fixed Stephensd (talk) 16:11, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
Yep, it's fixed. Thanks! --Toni Sant (talk) 09:45, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
  • MP3 PLAYER: We no longer have a way to easily embed mp3 or other audio files. Previously we did this through the flashmp3 extension and there are a number of (now dead) links relating to this across the wiki. Is there a way to reactivate this extension, or perhaps find a replacement that will enable us to embed mp3s and other audio files? --Toni Sant (talk) 14:27, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
    • Hmmm. MP3 playback seems to work here : Miriam Spiteri. Are there any examples of non-working files so I can check them? Stephensd (talk) 15:01, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
    • FlashMP3 working again. Not ideal as it is a flash-based system and needs manual setup. Other options may be better longer term, but nothing seems obvious from the extension pool right now
