Datu, kif kien magħruf, kien klarinettista tajjeb u kien idoqq dan l-istrument maż-żewġ baned tal-Belt Valletta, Società Filarmonica Nazionale La Valette u Soċjeta Filarmonika King's Own. Sa minn età żgħira kien maħtur bħala direttur tal-Orkestra Mendelssohn ta’ Ħaż-Żebbug stess.

Il-kapaċità ta’ Mro. Gatt bħala direttur ġiet rikonoxxuta u mfaħħra mid-diretturi barranin ewlenin tal-baned Maltin, Mro. Aurelio Doncich u Mro. Cardenio Botti.

Kompożizzjonijiet aktar popolari tiegħu huma The Impressione Sinfonica 1565 u The Celebrated Ave Maria, li ġew komposti meta kien marid ħafna fis-sena 1949. Kompożizzjoni oħra mill-isbaħ iġġib l-isem ta’ Addio Amore. Mro. Gatt ikkompona numru ta’ marċi popolari fosthom dak bl-isem ta’ Mater Mitis, li għalih hu kiteb ukoll il-lirika, kif ukoll ġie kompost apposta għall-Għaqda Karmelitana Banda Queen Victoria 1865.
