This was Malta's first time at the Eurovision Song Contest. Joe Grech sang Maria l-Maltija, which remained a popular Maltese song for many years after the Eurovision appearance.

Singer Joe Grech is the brother of Mons Victor Grech, a broadcaster and priest who pioneered social awareness talk shows on radio in Malta.

Massimo Ranieri represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971. He placed 5th with 91 points.
