Kantera Band  was formed in 2020 with the aim of bringing together Malta’s traditional folk genre with modern ones. Its musical style is based in an encounter of instruments coming from the folk scene with that of electronic musical instruments, to create a unique sound — a music of the present that speaks at once to the future, and through the past. In terms of style, Kantera’s songs are built around lyrics in the Maltese tongue that touch upon social and cultural themes of the moment as well as ones from past eras, not least through the use of Maltese proverbs and the input of gifted vocalists and musicians from Malta and Gozo.

The sound of Kantera is shaped by a range of instruments. These include the piano-accordion, keyboards, saxophone, aerophone, mandolin, violin, electric and base guitars, Malta’s traditional flejguta and żafżafa instruments, percussions as well as lead and backing vocals. The Kantera style has been conceived to draw younger and adolescent audiences closer to Malta’s folk and traditional sound — and this by means of a unique fusion of both instrument and lyric in our songs. Kantera is a space of music where the past melds into the present — once more, it comes to life in those moments we experience as we journey through the sounds of modern folk.
Kantera's mission is to promote the Maltese culture and Maltese language through its music, keeping Maltese music alive, modernizing and improving it. Our goal is clearly reflected in the fact that we use both traditional Maltese instruments as well as modern electronic ones. A language must continue to evolve, and so should Maltese music.

Kantera will be one of the Finalist of the First Edition Festival Mużika Mużika - Festival Kanzunetta Maltija with the Maltese Song L-Ewwel Jien penned by Joe Julian Farrugia and music by Elton Zarb
The band started in 2020 when we started working on specific material with the intention to merge traditional Maltese instruments with more modern ones. Through this approach, along with the use of Maltese proverbs and idioms, our objective is to create a unique sound that represents Maltese music in a progressive, evolving manner, overcoming the perception that it is only traditional music associated with the past. Emotions play a crucial role in this context and therefore we also value and prioritise cheerful and joyful sounds in our music.

Whilst we were working on our first material in 2021, Mużika Mużika Festival was announced and we decided to participate in this prestigious festival. As it turned out, our first public appearance led to us placing third with our first entry “L-Ewwel Jien”. Subsequently in 2022 we participated again in Mużika Mużika where we placed second with “Tkun ’l Hawn Għaddi” and this year we competed again and places 2nd with “Vjagg Sabih”

Apart from these three successful festival entries, we also released a number of original songs in our album called VJAGG SABIH.

Since the band’s formation, we have also been invited to participate in various renowned concerts and events around Malta, including Malta Rocks, Beer Festival, APS Summer Festival, Ritmu Festival, Ilwien Festival, Għaxaq Music Festival, Mediterranean Tourism Forum, Mnarja in Buskett, Malta International Wine Festival, Malta International Fireworks Festival, Kalkara Fest, Malta International Food Festival, The Malta International AirShow, Notte Bianca and several concerts around the Maltese islands and abroad.
