Christine Dimech.

Christine Dimech, born on 16 November 1982, hails from Naxxar. She has been playing the saxophone since the age of nine, when she started her musical studies at the Għaqda Mużikali Marija Bambina, Banda Vittorja, Naxxar under the guidance of Edwin Pace.

Subsequently she continued her studies with Noel Beck, Lawrence Borg and Yvette Maria Galea under whose tutelage she achieved the Fellowship of the London College of Music (FLCM) and the Advanced Certificate of the ABRSM. Recently she has been under the tutelage of Maltese saxophonist Joseph Vella and Paris-based Italian saxophonist Antonino Mollica.

In 2001, Christine won the mature category of the “Young Musicians Competition”, subsequently being awarded a scholarship at the London College of Music at Thames Valley University in London. There she studied mainly with saxophonist Steve Cottrell. In August 2013, with the support of the Malta Arts Fund she attended masterclasses in Sicily where she studied with world-renowned saxophonists Fabrizio Mancuso, Antonino Mollica, Mario Ciaccio, Pascal Bonnett and Frederico Alba. She has also attended masterclasses with Hayrapet Arakelyan.

Christine has participated in various concerts, TV programs and other productions in Malta playing with various orchestras, bands and ensembles including Ruben Zahra’s ethnic group Nafra, saxophone quartet Sassofoni and various local band clubs. She has also performed with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra on numerous occasions, also as a guest soloist, thus having the opportunity to play under the prestigious batons of conductors Wayne Marshall, Brian Schembri and Michael Laus amongst others.

She is a member of the renowned Big Band Brothers with which she is resident saxophonist. She has also performed in other countries, namely England, Italy and Tunisia. In the latter country she premiered Maltese composer Gordon Zammit’s The Contested Land, a contemporary piece for piano and soprano saxophone during an international festival in August 2002.

Christine is also interested in musical direction and has, in fact, attended conducting lessons with the much respected Mro.Joseph Sammut. Presently, she is assistant musical director at the Vittorja Band Club, a role which she has held for the past thirteen years.

In October/November 2013, Christine will be organizing the first edition of the Malta Saxophone Festival, a festival totally dedicated to the education and exposure of this instrument.

On the side, Christine holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and is a senior lecturer at the ICT department at MCAST. She is married to Antoine Dimech and is mother to her daughter Emily Georgea.
