Mro. Chev. Abel Joseph Mizzi FLCM, LRCM, and OST

Mro. Abel Joseph Mizzi A.MUS.,LCM.OStA. born in Ħal-Qormi on 28 September, 1924. He was a Musical Director.

He studied at the Government Primary School. Qormi and De La Salle College, Cottonera.

He commened his musical studies att Għaqda Mużikali San Ġorġ Martri. Qormi under Mro. Anġelo Pulicino.

After the war he furthered his studies in theory, harmony, counterpoint, fuga and instrumentalisation under Mro. Carmelo Pace, and obtained the FLCM, LRCM, and OST.

He was appointed assisrtant musical dierector with Għaqda Mużikali San Ġorġ Martri. Qormi in 1952, and in 1963 musical director with the Soċjeta Mużikali Trinita Mqaddsa of Marsa. In the same year he was appointed musical director with Lourdes Band Club of Paola, today known Soċjeta Filamonika Fra. Antione De Paule Kirstu Re while in 1988 was appointed director of Soċjeta Mużikali La Stella Levantina Banda Santa Marija of Ħad-Attard.

During his career, Mizzi in 1955 introduced female members for the band clubs, bandswomen, and as musical director of Għaqda Mużikali San Ġorġ Martri. He won the first prize at the annual Band Clubs concert at the Manoel Theater in 1983.

He composed various marches and funeral marches, like O Vos Omnes, Poplu Tiegħi, Quddiem id-Dulur, My Home Town, In Memorial di Mia Madre, Fi Triqti lejn Qabri, Ta Cassar and many more, as well as sacred hymns. He composed Fantasia in Do Minors, Il-Konvoj ta’ Santa Marija the Oratorio. Is-Sultana tal-Maltin, and many others.

Abel J. Mizzi was married to Alice nee’ Cassar, and they got seven children, Salvina, Vitorina, Agnes, Mry, Ruben, Mro. Archibald Mizzi and Noemi.

On 21, April, 2018, Chev. Mro. Abel Joseph Mizzi at the age of 93 passed away peacefully at St Vincent de Paul Residence, comforted by the rites of Holy Church.
