The fourth edition of the World Youth Day Song Contest was held last month at the Teatru Aurora (Balzan). No fewer than 10 Maltese Christian bands - some already well-established, some new - participated in the contest, performing live to a crowd of 300 people. The songs performed were based on the theme for youth "Our Hope is in the Living God”, as chosen by Pope Benedict XVI, and the original compositions performed by Altaer, Cornerstone, Counterbalance & Roberta, Crossbows, Crossroads, Followers, Footprints, His Project, Immediate Denial and Switchphonik transformed the event into a night of praise and worship.

With each band going all out to give its best performance, choosing a winner proved to be a difficult task for the jury, faced with the missive of picking the song which best represented the World Youth Day official theme. The competitive edge however wasn’t the main driving force behind the competing songs; for the participating bands, it was more the aim of spreading the Christian message to young people through music that matters the most.

In the end, the results showed that Tamitna Fih by Counter Balance & Roberta was voted the Best Song, automatically making it this year’s official World Youth Day theme song. Footprints’ It-Tama Taghna fil-Mulej, was voted as the Best Interpretation, while Cornerstone’s Tapestry was voted as the Best Lyric. This year’s contest, was coordinated by the Diocesan Youth Commission (KDZ) and organised by the young people of Balzan Youth Centre, is the first part of a three-year cycle that lead up to the 2011 World Youth Day celebrations that will be held in Madrid, Spain.
