Pawlu Seychell Il-Għannej

Pawlu Seychell l-Għannej.

(1907-1992) was one of Malta's foremost folksingers. Hence his nickname, the folksinger. He was born in Żejtun on the 10th February 1907. He began singing from the tender age of seven.

During his lifelong career in folk singing, he sang with the prime performers of his time, although he struck a special relationship with Ninu Galea l-Kalora. His preferred genre was the improvised verse, although he also sang some ballads.

A native of Żejtun, Seychell managed a wine shop in Msida, the venue of so many għana sessions. He also penned lyrics of ballads, which were printed as chapbooks by Universal Press of Msida Road, Gżira. One particular ballad, Delitt Waħxi fuq Anton Aquilina, concerned the murder of Toni Aquilina in Valletta on the 23 August 1960.

In 2007, Mikiel Cutajar Is-Superstar sung a ballad in honour of Seychell, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth in Żejtun. This is considered as one of Cutajar's foremost rendition of a ballad, due to his heartfelt performance about a most revered folksinger from his hometown.
