Malcolm Ellul

Malcolm Ellul was born on 11th July, 1975. He is an Actor and a Stunt man.

From a tender age Malcolm was fascinated by stage arts and remained actively involved in theatre throughout his school years. Eventually, other interests, namely his pursue for a professional career as a specialist risk manager and consultant and his family gradually took over in priority and Malcolm had to put his hobbies on the back burner, only filling in from time to time. Now, with three kids in tow and a hectic profession he relies on the support and encouragement of his actress wife Elizabeth Ellul Hawes to dedicate more time to his hobbies but has opted to concentrate more on filming than on theatre since the former is less taxing on his otherwise still busy agenda.

I just simply love theatre, particularly the friendships you build and the adrenaline rush before the curtain is raised quotes Malcolm, but theatre requires more commitment than I can afford so I have settled for film work instead with just the occasional stint on the woodwork.

Malcolm still however managed to keep himself very much “in the scene” throughout the years and trained in acting, theatre, production, direction and stunts, supplementing his distinctive huge frame and rugged looks with specialist abilities as are Car & Motorcycle Action, Sword, Street and Arena Fighting, Horse Riding, Falls, Martial Arts and Boxing techniques. Malcolm’s better asset however remains his versatility in impersonating contrasting roles and his filming and theatre portfolio could not be a better testament [[1]]

Looking back Malcolm can still boast over 100 productions under his belt ranging from commercials and short films to popular local and international TV series and a number of blockbusters. He has in fact rubbed shoulders with some of the industry’s greatest actors and directors in varying capacities from simple background roles to more prominent appearances and crew work including alongside heart-throb legends as are Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, Sean Bean, Daniel Craig, Eric Bana, Rachel Weisz and Raoul Bova.

And when you have been engaged on such great sets as those of Gladiator (2000), Munich (2005), Agora (2009), Game of Thrones (2011), Skyfall (2012) and WWZ (2013) you would expect that Malcolm has quite a story to share and in fact has been interviewed on a number of occasions by local and foreign media on his onset experiences.

Filming is character development and the first lesson you learn is to leave your ego at home. You do what you have to do and usually much more and if you get told off, and you will be, you just take it in your stride … adds Malcolm. And to make a point, in more recent years he has been engaged in varying film crew roles including on set assistant direction and crowd management, production management, locations, casting, script supervision and continuity, further supplementing his experience in the field.

Since 2005 Malcolm has also become a popular face on local television. He has appeared in some of the leading dramas and TV Productions, to mention a few … Solitaire (2005), Tgħanniqa (2007), Kristu Tal-Kerrejja (2008), Miriana Coljero` (2008), Dejjem Tiegħek Becky (2008), FIVE06 (2009), L-Evanġelisti (2009/10), F’Salib it-Toroq (2009/10/11), Deċeduti (2011), La Famiglia (2011), Atlantis (2012), Eklissi (2012), Klassi Ghalina (2013), Prima Facie (2013) and Katrina (2013).

At this Malcolm smiles.

The fun element in local filming used to be somewhat exacerbated by the failure of some viewers to distinguish between the real persona and the fictional character resulting in undue personal attacks on some of my actor colleagues. Today it seems that viewership has matured and whilst comments on the characters are made and encouraged, personal slandering has become almost a thing of the past which augurs well and encourages actors to take on more challenging and controversial roles and script writers to oblige accordingly.

But his local reach does not stop at drama. Malcolm has appeared in about 25 commercials including in some very popular ones. The one for which he is most remembered is undoubtedly the Frisian Flag TVC which has been airing since 2009 and features Malcolm pulling along a large dairy cow. And although Malcolm has changed in appearance considerably since this TVC was shot, he still gets a number of people, particularly kids, pulling pranks on the cow.

Theatre still remains on the back burner but nonetheless Malcolm has to his credit an interesting list of sketches he has performed in ranging from comedy to Shakespeare and others with more religious connotations. He has also participated, judged and compeered in a number of private and public events and has a number of projects lined-up ahead so time-management is crucial, especially if he is to maintain his daily exercise routine, of which he is particularly fond. I dedicate 90 mins a day for stamina training namely power walks, chin-ups, push-ups and sit-ups and maintain a well-balanced diet. A healthy lifestyle gives you that feel-good factor which helps in no small way to curb stage-fright when in front of a lens or a packed hall.

At the moment Malcolm is playing the character of ALFRED in the popular local drama series KATRINA.
