Yasmin Kuymizakis (born 29 June 1989) is a singer-songwriter and producer from Dingli, Malta. She is also known as Yews, Ġiżimina and JOON.

Yasmin Kuymizakis is the co-founder of the Malta Sound Women Network, a non-profit organization that aims to bring like-minded women together through a shared knowledge of skills in music, sound technologies, sonic arts & production.

Early Life and Career

Yasmin Kuymizakis was born and raised in Malta. She is of Maltese, Libyan and Greek descent. After being involved in a car accident in 2011, Kuymizakis decided to follow her long-time passion for music so she taught herself audio software to start producing her own songs. She made her public debut later that year as supporting act for Beangrowers.

In 2012 Yasmin Kuymizakis moved to London to study for a BA(Hons) in Sounds Arts and Sound Design at London College of Communications, followed by an MMus in Sonic Arts at Goldsmiths University.

Yews

In September 2011, she released a number of songs through SoundCloud. These included: Yellow, Rainy Season, You're Leaving Too Soon, In Time and Sarah.

Remixes of In Time by Sonitus Eco and Istishhad Hheva have also appeared on SoundCloud.

Her song Yellow was featured on Toni Sant's 271st Mużika Mod Ieħor podcast on Saturday 24 September 2011.

Ġiżimina

Ġiżimina covers and performs Maltese songs with lyrics that portray the woman in the negative, such as 'Il-Mara u X-Xitan' originally performed by Emanuele Cilia and 'Tibqa Xebba Ma Jaqbillekx' by Mikiel Abela.

In 2017, Ġiżimina exhibited her sound installation 'Xandira Moqżieza' at Notte Biance. The sound installation consisted of radios hung on washing lines, broadcasting Ġiżimina's own renditions of Maltese folksongs which exhibit the chauvinistic attitudes of the 20th century Maltese man.

Ġiżimina also covered Mary Rose Mallia's 'Il-Bejjiegħa tal-Ward' as a protest song to the construction industry.

JOON

JOON joined LA-based record label Italians Do It Better in April 2020. Her debut single "E.T." was chosen by fashion's favorite sound director Michel Gaubert to soundtrack the first ever Animal Crossing digital fashion show, hosted by Vogue.

JOON also features in "After Dark 3", which is the third edition of Italians Do It Better compilation series out in 2020.

Mixed by Johnny Jewel, her debut album will be out in 2021.
