Ċikku Xuereb

Ċikku Xuereb (born 1932) was a Maltese footballer, who played with Floriana FC and later Hibernians, playing as a left winger during the 1950s and 60s.

Early career

Xuereb was a product of the Floriana Little Ajax, were the younger category of the legendary Floriana Ajax.

He made his debut in senior local football at the age of 17 with Floriana FC in 1949. His fine dribbling on the left wing and crosses to the strikers contributed in no small measures to the Greens’ five league championships in the early 1950s.

Ċikku n-Nagħġa

He won F.A. Trophy and Cassar Cup medals during his days with Floriana FC and then moved on to play with Vittoriosa Stars in 1955. He stayed there two seasons before joining Hibernians with whom he played until 1963 winning the Cassar Cup, an F.A. Trophy and the club’s first ever league title in 1960-1961.

Better known in local football circles as Ċikku n-Nagħġa, he played four times with the national team before retiring in 1964 after moving shortly to play with Ħamrun Spartans.

Family connections

His brothers Raymond Xuereb and George Xuereb both played with Floriana FC and the national team.

His sons Paul and Charles have both served as committee members of Floriana FC, while his nephew Aaron Xuereb also plays with Floriana FC and Hibernians.

He died on 17 February 2003 at the age of 71.
