Viper Soup Complex is a progressive rock / metal band that started off as a project with the aim of creating uninhibited musical expressions. This collaboration between musicians from different backgrounds resulted in the band's development of an eclectic musical palette that is constantly evolving.

The Beginning

The band started in 2012 after Michael Spiteri (ex Sepia bassist) and Julian Mallia (drummer for Different Strings at the time) decided to meet for a jamming session with Owen Grech (guitarist, Nisġa, Stone Shiva). There was an instant chemistry between the trio and this resulted in them meeting regularly and recording a collection of ideas they deemed promising. Being keen listeners of both known and obscure bands from different genres they also shared their individual interests with the group - somewhat enhancing the band's vocabulary. Eventually, the need to introduce a narrative element and express more complex ideas in the music led the band to look for a singer. Having successfully worked with Michael in the band Sepia, Annemarie Spiteri (ex Sepia) was the obvious choice. She joined the band on vocals in 2013.

Whilst working on a number of tracks the band started feeling the need to add a cinematic quality and more sonorous depth to their music. To this end David Ciantar (keyboardist for Zerious Funk, ex Different Strings) agreed to temporarily join on keyboards in order to help the band record their debut track "Taxidermy Hotel", after which he decided to remain as a full-time member of the band.

Band Name and Style

The name Viper Soup Complex is the result of a tongue in cheek observation on how the band members perceive their own music. Their compositions include elements from a variety of music such as metal, progressive rock, jazz, and classical, while maintaining a creative and playful approach towards songwriting.

Influences

Opeth, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Tool, Haken, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Genesis, Planet X, Animals as Leaders, Metallica, Slayer, The Mars Volta, Anathema, Pain of Salvation, Dark Suns, The Aristocrats, Massive Attack, David Bowie, Duran Duran and Kate Bush.

Debut Track - Taxidermy Hotel

Viper Soup Complex's first single, Taxidermy Hotel, was released online on 28 November, 2014. The story behind the song was inspired by movies such as Taxidermia, The Fly and the Bioshock game Series, taking place in a fictional Noir setting. It tells the story of a hunter of limbs who is looking for a place to stay for the night. He is greeted by the charismatic host of a hotel who in turn dazzles, drugs and chases him throughout the hotel. Her sole intention is to create a king for her other crafted creatures who aid her in this endeavour.
