I'm writing this to test whether you'll get a note at the top of your screen notifying you that you get a "You have new messages" through a banner like the one we saw together on Wikipedia the other day. According to the MediaWiki documentation, this is an out of the box feature and no extension is required...but I'm not sure whether it's actually turned on by default. Yes, I can totally believe that...cause I just tried to protect them, but I don't think I managed to get them all! :-) It's probably better if we categorize them, as many of them are currently listed as Wikipedia this or that in terms of categories. I'm actually quite confused and I think we need some very basic documentation (possibly on the template files themselves) to keep track of what's what.
