Still examining captcha tools given the spam we've started to receive - can't install the FancyCaptcha functions provided by Python libs as yet becasue of lack of shell access to hosting. could be a way around that, however. Also , it appears that trying to use Google's ReCaptcha in pages isn't playing nice either. for now, SimpleCaptcha is turned on but it's not ideal. Stephensd 12:10, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

We've had several more over this weekend! I think I've blocked/deleted most or all. Another precaution may be to require an email address AND email validation for any new user. This is a pain because it produces another barrier for bona fide potential new users, but it's fairly standard practice with other services. I think even Facebook works with an email validation process. I expect this only involves a simple config setting rather than an extension. --Toni Sant (talk) 17:29, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
May also look at this resource - [[1]] for longer term planning. Whoever is doing this is not using massive automation, as the numbers of incursions are low - this looks like the personal touch to me

I spoke too soon on my talk page! :-) There's still a little cleanup to do because we have extra/missing template subpages and/or references to a Wikipedia protected template category. --Toni Sant (talk) 11:24, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

This next one is not really a test! :-) --Toni Sant (talk) 12:34, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

  • Steve, I've added both .tif and .tiff as allowed uploadable types to the Mediawiki configuration. This will still not solve the problem of the larger files being too much for the present hosting to cope with. I'm in a position to batch convert them to jpg if you can get them to me another way, however.

Style and Mobile

Maybe a few issues over the next couple of days as I do some hacking around on trying to get mobile style sheets better integrated into the main site and with trying to give tg the access he wants to mail addresses. I've been hacking at an extension called ShowRealUsernames, to alter it and grab email details out. Not quit playing as yet, though it's early days.

That would be great Mr D :) Tony Grimaud(talk) 17:48, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

  • Update

ShowRealUsernames is proving to be awkward, as is hacking the Special Listusers page. A slight workaround is that I've installed an extension called LookupUser (available to sysops and administrators only) that lets you look at more detailed information for each user. It could be nicer if it were linked form the Userlist, but at least you have a chance to see quite a lot of more detailed info rounded up for a user in one place - it's in the Special Pages section

User Messages

I'm writing this to test whether you'll get a note at the top of your screen notifying you that you get a "You have new messages" through a banner like the one we saw together on Wikipedia the other day. According to the MediaWiki documentation, this is an out of the box feature and no extension is required...but I'm not sure whether it's actually turned on by default. Could you please reciprocate on my user talk page? --Toni Sant (talk) 18:10, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

users info

Is there a quicker way to view/extract detailed info about the m3p users? I aim to look at the users' frequency of contributions, their emails, and other data. cheers.Tony Grimaud(talk) 12:21, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Templates

Should we protect all the templates you've just created? --Toni Sant (talk) 16:27, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

it's probably not a bad idea - didn't do it at the time ecasue I was just picking through the never-ending trail... :) Stephensd 19:22, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I can totally believe that...cause I just tried to protect them, but I don't think I managed to get them all! :-) It's probably better if we categorize them, as many of them are currently listed as Wikipedia this or that in terms of categories. I'm actually quite confused and I think we need some very basic documentation (possibly on the template files themselves) to keep track of what's what. Anyway, I'll leave it to you, but don't hesitate to let me know if I can help in any way. --Toni Sant (talk) 11:40, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Maltese characters

Just saw the new feature you added below the save button on the edit pages. Very cool! Thanks...or better still: grazzi ħafna! --Toni Sant (talk) 16:53, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
