Tony Briffa

Tony Briffa was born in Malta in 1959, he studied ceramics in the seventies with the late Gabriel Caruana.

After almost ten years working in the ceramic industry, he was entrusted with the ceramic instruction at Tarġa Gap School for Craftsmen, Malta. Since the early eighties, he exhibited in a significant number of national and international juried exhibitions, drawing the attention of art critics and connoisseurs. In 1995, he was awarded the Commonwealth Foundation Fellowship in Art and Crafts, which he pursued later as a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for the Arts, Hobart, University of Tasmania.

He moved to Denmark in 2002 where he now lives and work with his wife, Jette and daughter, Nina. Tony was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2015 and the Malta Arts Council Grant in 2016 for his ceramic sculptures.

"Briffa`s imagination seems boundless, yet this brainstorming is backed by attention to finish, with excellent glazes and harmonious toning. Jeorg Andersch"[1]

Artist's Statment

I am a Maltese ceramic artist working in Denmark.
I feel that,
Being born in Malta and having a Scandinavian adopted country
Two very distinctive cultures
Gives me a very unique status.
My creative production does have a particular twist.
I tend to use very colourful glazes on my sculptures but my forms are minimalistic.
Over the years,
I have sought inspiration from various sources, both natural and man-made
This led me to develop my own idiom in expressing myself.
My primary medium has always been ceramics
For more than forty years, I have been juggling with clay.
My recent work is this craze in attempting to transform retrospective memories

Into 3D sculptures.[2]
