Spiru Zammit

Spiru Zammit (21 May 1930 - 4 February 1992) was a Maltese musician.

He started his music lessons at 13 years of age under Mro Casapinta. He used to play the organ in St Dominic’s church in Valleta. When he was 19, he started playing in entertainment spots and at first he used to play in Vinny Vella’s big band.

After further training both abroad and in Malta, Spiru spent 9 years playing in Oscar Lucas’s orchestra. Then he formed his own band playing in different hotels and night clubs. His orchestra became a regular at the Carnival enclosure in Valletta and in local festivals accompanying the best local singers.

Spiru wrote several band marches, including the music for the Hamrun Spartans anthem.
