Sonia Young

Sonia Young, daughter of John and Carmen Mamo was born in Birżebbuġia on the 22 of August 1957, She married Stephen Young on the 3 of February 1979, and they have two children - Niki married to Alexia and Stephanie. She is a grandmother to Emily u Nicole Young.

Sonia was educated at Maria Regina Secondary School and later followed a course in Business Management at MCAST Polytechnic. She later joined Air Malta as a Ground Hostess.

Sonia commenced her broadcasting career with the local Church radio station RTK since its inception in 1992 . Her career took off as a Part-time Continuity Announcer and she has, for the past 25 years worked as producer/presenter in the Programmes Department. She has of late been promoted as Assistant to the Editor-In-Chief.

She had the opportunity to produce and present various prestigious programmes such as the school quiz 'Qis Mitt Darba Aqta’ Darba', 'Ewropa.. Ewropa', 'L-Annimal Ħabib tal-Bniedem', 'Lejlet il-Festa' and 'Ħolqa mal-Awstralja' – programmes requiring ample research.

One of her favourite series was 'Il-Kunsill Tiegħek', which was transmitted on RTK when the first Local Councils were set-up way back in 1993. For many years she also produced and presented the popular magazine programm ‘Għalina Lkoll’.

Presently she presenting and producing a daily magazine programme 'Insellimlekż. This is a first both for RTK and for local broadcasting, because besides being transmitted live on 103fm, this programme is also live streamed on internet, thus giving RTK followers the opportunity to actually see and follow what is going on in the studio.

She was also co-founder and production assistant during RTK’s philanthropic campaigns organised at Christmas time since 1993, in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, Families in Need and Refugees. Sonia is an animal lover, especially dogs.

She also loves nature and is very environmentally conscious.

In July 2017 she was awarded ‘Ġieħ Ta’ Xbiex’.

She firmly believes that her position as a broadcaster, also makes it her duty to help listeners in any way they deem fit, especially with guidance to any help they might require from professional guests who participate during her programmes. As she insists This duty is part and parcel of our obligations towards are listeners who welcome us into their homes through RTK, and adopt us part of their families.
