STUB

This former stub needs expanding

Stubs are like acorns. The first seed was planted and someone nurtured it to the point where it is no longer a stub. However, it still needs to be expanded and you can possibly help with that. There are possibly other M3P resources linking to it, but they are not mentioned here. You can help by expanding this page.

Song contests in Malta have become a way for Maltese pop songs to reach a general audience since the early 1960s.

Although there are antecedents in the area of għana, and possibly other types of performing arts-related contests, it's very likely that these where also following the rise of the San Remo festival, which became a cultural high-point through transmissions on Italian television RAI. The influence of San Remo is also felt in a number of other ways: the style of songs, the methods of presentation, the television tie-ins, the on and off association with the Eurovision Song Contest, and most significantly in the use of the word festival to describe such contests.
