Soar - Anatomy in Motion is an installation that has been planned as a project of excellence, a body of work featuring 44 photographic prints culminating a 5-year project by Charles Paul Azzopardi relating to covering performing arts and dance photography all over the world as eclectically as possible. It aims to transcend any particular sector by innovatively combining photography, dance and original writing assigned to each frame, transcending more than one medium and intertwining interdisciplinarity. The project was envisaged and designed that while the whole sequence of photographic prints and original poetic writings, besides being an individual frame in themselves telling their own story, when viewed sequentially, both the images and writing form one cohesive, melodious and holistic whole, with one global story and thread intertwined from the start to the end of the exhibition, and the artist is committed to bring this thought process and preparation to fruition. The projected outcome is an exhibition combining photographic prints and original poetic writing, together with workshop and lectures related to project.

This exhibition seeks to give more exposure to the Maltese dance, photography and literature scenes, which is poignant seeing the ongoing and recent upsurge in the Maltese dance scene, as well as the recent institution of the national Maltese dance company ZfinMalta, a clear brand of national relevance to the country’s creative ecology and future, as well bringing to the fore the existence of upcoming young creative fine art photographers and writers who seek to break new ground through the photographic and literature artistic mediums, with a distinct level of project excellence and a brand of black & white vision and artistry previously unseen with such clarity and evocative force.

This project has been planned and prepared to offer multiple opportunities for numerous segments of the public to engage with the project on myriad levels, be it photography, writing or dance, discover arts and culture as well as participate creatively via the corollary lectures and guided tours planned together with the exhibition. Thus, the project involves various communities, including but not limited to photographers, creatives, writers, dancers and the general public and aims to be more inclusive of under-represented segments which usually do not engage in arts activities by insisting on the concept that dance, photography and literature are not simply for the connoisseurs but can be made accessible on multiple levels as art forms in themselves as well as interwoven together.

It is one of the stated aims to create debate and wider understanding regarding the state of dance, photography and literature in Malta today by providing the medium and the spaces needed to start a debate between dance schools, dancers, photographers and script writers regarding how to promulgate a plan how to move the various sectors forward, as well as placing the arts at the heart of learning, innovation, education and community development by creating a stronger dance community, more respect for dance photographers as artists in their own right and more networking between the various segments of the dance community and scriptwriters.

“Charles Paul Azzopardi is carving something of a niche for himself as a photographer who captures dynamic human bodies in striking black and white… Teodor Reljic [1]
