Sarah Crystal was born on the 10 of January 1990. She currently lives in Attard, Malta. She is a singer and actress
Sarah is best known as an actress for her roles of Leah in Déjà vu and Scarlet in Becky, however she started her career as a singer.
Her love for singing started at a very young age. In 1996, Moira Barbieri recognized that Sarah had a remarkable singing voice and encouraged her to enrolee for singing lessons.
In 1998, auditions were held for the Malta Children’s Choir directed by Ray Mangion. Sarah was shortlisted and eventually successfully chosen to be part of this choir. During her years with this choir, she had the opportunity to sing as a soloist at the MCC in front of president emeritus Dr. Ugo Mifsud Bonnici. Sarah also had the opportunity to take part in the musical Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, whereby she discovered her passion for drama and stage. Sarah subsequently joined Act React, a school directed also by Ray Mangion, where she developed her acting, dancing and singing talents.
In 1999, she was selected to be part of the televised musical Il-Ħanut tal-Gugarelli directed by Zep Camilleri. From 1996 to 2000, Sarah participated in various local festivals with own original songs and different covers. Very often Sarah terminated the festival on the podium. Throughout this time, she was also invited to several television programmes and local events.
Between 2001 and 2012, Sarah focused all her energy on drama studies. She took part in various musicals, television adverts, street theatre activities in aid of numerous charity organisations, secondary and main parts in several Maltese drama primarily Qalb in-Nies, Erwieħ Imsakkra, Deċeduti, Iż-Zona, Xarabank re-enactments, Emilia, Déjà vu 2 & 3 and Becky the Return 1 & 2. Sarah also attended a number of drama seminars held by professional artists and companies across Malta. She successfully sat for various examinations in Theatrical Make Up at MCAST, Musical Theatre Studies and Photography.
Sarah decided to start taking vocal coaching again back in 2013. She recently also had a number of opportunities to sing as a backing vocalist with prominent local singers and also as the main artist in various festivals. The Malta Eurovision Song Contest , Summer Hit Song, Festival Internazzjonali tal-kanzunetta Maltija saw Sarah participating as a backing vocalist. Sarah partook twice in a yearly concert held by her vocal coaches Pamela Bezzina and Glen Vella as a main singer. Since 2014 she formed part of a choir called Vocal Troupes directed by Pamela Bezzina and Glen Vella.
Sarah’s role model and musical inspiration is Taylor Swift. She loves her music and she loves the fact that Taylor Swift writes most of the lyrics correlated to her personal experiences. She followed her from the beginning of her career. Sarah finds the extensive transformation Taylor made in her music as something incredible and admirable.
For Sarah, a world with no music is dull. Sarah finds comfort in music. She turns to music when in need to express her happy and sad moments. Music heals pain, gives you motivation, hope and positive energy. Music takes you to special instants in life, people you have met, places you have visited and emotions you have experienced. Harry Styles, one of her male idols, expressed exactly what she thinks and feels about music That’s the amazing thing about music: there’s a song for every emotion. Can you imagine a world with no music? It would suck. Sarah thinks that people unite and the world changes only through music and lyrics. Music produces a vibe which the human being simply cannot do without.
One of Sarah’s top dreams is to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest. Sarah will definitely remember this experience as it is not only special because it’s one step closer to her all-time aspiration and because she has co-written the lyrics and worked with her dream team Dj Toby Farrugia and Pamela Bezzina. She hopes that this experience will give her the exposure and skills needed to continue working in this industry as well as prominence and success in Malta and abroad.
Sarah’s message to her fans is this: Always dream and believe in yourself. Unfortunately life is a bumpy road with a lot of highs and lows. Enjoy and appreciate every little moment as if it were your last. Try and live life to the full. Do not let fear abolish your dreams. If you really want it, then do anything possible to achieve it. I know that words are easier said than done, because I too struggle to keep up with them sometimes, but nothing comes easy in life.
