Sammy Bartolo

Sammy Bartolo (18 August 1947 - 20 November 1997) was a Maltese singer and drummer from Mellieħa. His proper name was Salvu, but he was very well known as Sammy.

At a very younger age Sammy participated in various song festival organized by the (ZHN) [Żgħażagħ Ħaddiema Nsara]. In 1968 he set up with some other friends the group New Cuorey and in 1972 went for a tour in England and toured in many leading clubs in Manchester and Blackpool.

In 1975 they went to played in Toronto , at Canada, and even appearedon Graham Cable TV. In Canada they released the song Id-Dgħajsa tal-Latini, while in 1976, they released the L-Aħħar Bidwi f’Wied il-Għasel with lyrics by Alfred C. Sant and composer by Paul Abela.

He also played the part of Jesus Christ in the Musical Ikun Li Trid Int it-triq tas-salib showed on MTV in 1976, and was issued on a Long Play by the YTC Youth Travel Circle in 1977, later on in 2002 this work by Manwel Mifsud and Theresa Cassar was also issued on a cd.

Sammy Bartolo he himself also taken part in several festivals also win too, one of them was the First Edition of Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 1983 when he placed second with a song Tagħlima written and composed by Jo Naudi in that editon he also win the prize of the Best Singer. In this festival got another two songs Urini Ħabib at 1984 and Sewwa Sew Il-Lum in 1987.

Beside that in 1985 he taken part in the Festival tal-Kanzunetta Maltija 1985 with the song Poeżija.

In 1986 Sammy formed another band called The Harmonics and released a cassette called Maltese Memories. He co-opetated with Paul Abela and Alfred C.Sant in several other projects. One of them was the cd Album Unity For Liberation issued by the Libyians.

In 1996 he sang Ħallini Noħlom on a double Chirstmas compilation cd of local seasonal songs that raised money for the Eden Foundation.

His other songs include with the New Cuorey Riviera Blu, Il-Bajja tal-Mellieħa, Bħal Daż-Żmien konna Flimkien, Għanja lill-Aħjax, It-Tunnara, Sejjieħ, Il-Vitorja, Poeżija, Stilel Oħra, Poeżija, Imħabba U Melodija, Kemm hu Sabiħ. Most of this songs were write by Anthony Fenech and Ray Mahoney and composed by Joe S.Grech and Mro.Paul Ablea.

Most of this songs where issued by the New Cuorey on vinyl records between 1973 and 1977, and a few months before his dead although he was sick he record them again for a cd Album issued by The New Cuorey in 1997.
