Born in Żabbar on the 31st March 1905, he was considered as one of the more educated għannejja, his occupation being a building contractor. He has been referred to by many established folksingers, including Salvu Pace Is-Sulari as one of the ablest in improvising stanzas.

Darmanin passed away in 1976. His voice has been recorded on open reel, but it is not easily accessible on social media. He is the uncle of Fredu Abela Il-Bamboċċu.
