Ruth Portelli

Ruth Portelli was born on 2 July, 1989 and she used to reside in Qala, Gozo. She attended Qala Primary School and at the age of 11 she attended Agius de Soldanis Secondary School. Ruth proceeded with her studies at Sir M.A. Refalo School and read a B.A. (Hons.) in Maltese and Spanish Studies at the University of Malta.

Ruth was recognized as a singer by her kindergarten assistant Mrs Grace Buttigieg and by then Head Master Mr Joe Sacco. She sang for the first time on the school stage during a prize day. From then onwards, she competed in various festivals around Gozo, where she won several of them, and even in Malta in which she received very good results. She took part in various concerts, namely, the editions of the Gozo International Celebration (GIC) held in Qala three times a year, the Notte Gozitana, the Nadur Christmas Concert, the Qala International Folk Festival (QIFF), and had also accompanied the tenor Aldo Busuttil as a guest singer during his concerts. She was the first one to receive the Horace Mercieca Award, given during one of the GIC edition. She had given various recitals, the latest one being held at St. James Cavalier in Valletta.

At the early age of 11 she started taking part in popular operas at the Aurora Theatre in Gozo, the first one being Carmen, following Turandot, Nabucco, Fedora, La Forza del Destino, La Bohème, Aida and Tosca. She had the opportunity to sing abroad in major countries such as Slovenia, Lanciano in Italy, Vrnjacka Banja in Serbia, Kraljevo in Czech Republic and Greece. In October 2010, together with other Maltese singers, Ruth joined a choir who performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London at The Beatles Philharmonic Tribute. This event was under the distinguished patronage of H.E. The President of Malta and Mrs Abela and was in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund. In 2009 Ruth reached the semi-final of the Malta Eurosong with 2 songs, being, Innocent Heart and Blame It on Your Heart. A year later, she made it to the final with the song Three Little Words, penned by Gerard James Borg and composed by Philip Vella and placed 8th.

Moreover, Ruth is a soprano soloist in the well-known Gozitan choir Chorus Urbanus, directed by Mro. Dr.John Galea. In 2005 Ruth along with the other members of the Chorus Urbanus were ambassadors of Malta in Strasbourg where, there, they sang along with around 25 choirs from all over Europe in the cathedral of Strasbourg. In 18th April 2010 she joined the choir to animate the open-air mass which was celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI. On 3rd July 2011, the choir animated the sacred liturgy of this year’s Presbyteral Ordination at St. John’s Co-Cathedral and Ruth sang the Veni Creator. As part of an ongoing development program undertaken by Chorus Urbanus she had participated in various master classes with Juliette Bisazza Zanni. Ruth was honing her vocal capabilities under the guidance of Soprano Andriana Yordanova.

Although ‘music is her first love’, Ruth has kept away from the limelight in recent years, spending time with her family.

2016 was a game changer though, taking up more commitments in her homeland, appearing in the annual showcase, Rockastra under the direction of Mro.Sigmund Mifsud and Mro.Aurelio Belli featuring in a line-up of artists that included: Kevin Borg, Lara Dimech, Chris Grech and Fabian Galea amongst others.

In the midst of an extremely busy 2017 with productions of Fiddler on the Roof and also the opera Pagliacci, Ruth Portelli has approached Marc Calleja Bayliss of Ironic PR & Artist Management to represent her music career, and anything that follows.
