Nadine Axisa

Nadine Axisa was born in Fgura, on the 12th August 1981.

She is an established Maltese singer in Malta. She has been participating in the most prestigious Festivals both locally and abroad for the past 15 years, like l-Għanja tal-Poplu, Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, Malta TV International Hit Songs and Malta Song For Europe.

Nadine started voice training with Ms Irene Dillon at an early age of 7, continuing with Ms Beatrice Brogdorff; also qualifying for examinations with the Royal Schools of Music, mostly in classical musical training. At a later stage, when Nadine went into the jazz scene, she attended a jazz vocal course in Italy hosted by the Global Music Foundation. The tutors of the course were jazz singers Tina May and Iain Mackenzie, and Guillermo Rozenthuler, Argentinean singer, guitarist and composer. Breathing technique, repertoire, improvisation and working with a rhythm section were some of the themes tackled in the course. Basic principles of phrasing and expression,“impro-scat” and interpretation of Brazilian/South American songs were also covered.

It was a very pleasant experience for Nadine, which most of all encouraged her in being more adventurous in interpreting jazz standards, especially latin jazz numbers which remain her all-time favourite.

Nadine started her musical career in Maltese festivals doing backing vocals with other popular singers. When she was 15, her sister Marica Axisa wrote the song “Ma ninsik qatt” which Nadine sang as a soloist for the first time, winning the festival “Kliem u Mużika” organised by the Public Broadcasting Services. Since then, Nadine did not look back and participated in numerous local festivals such as Festival [[Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza]] which she won in 2003 together with Roger Tirazona with the song ”Inharsu ‘l Quddiem”. She participated in the Malta Song for Europe eight times in all, placing 6th in 2002 with “Think of you”. In 2006 she sang “Waves” which is still a favourite with the Maltese public.

In November 2002 Nadine represented Malta in Prague by singing in the Universe Talent Song Festival, placing third. She has also performed with the William Mangion Band in Piazza del Popolo, Rome with other bands from around Europe. In September 2003 she sang with Vinny Vella Snr band in London as part of Malta Day Celebrations under the patronage of Dr.Eddie Fenech Adami. Another performance abroad was in Corinthia Bab Africa in Tripoli accompanied by Vinny Vella Jnr Trio as part of the Malta Week.

An exciting adventure was in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 where she represented Malta as a backing vocalist with Thea Garett in Oslo. This was a beautiful experience for Nadine, where she could meet many journalists and Eurovision fans from all over Europe.

One of her most memorable experiences was in February and March 2012 where Nadine had the opportunity to sing to the Maltese immigrants in Australia namely in Wollongong, Adelaide and Sydney where she was very well received.

Her latest performance was in Poland in October 2012 where she toured a number of towns and cities performing her smooth jazz numbers together with pianist Christian Borg.

In addition, Nadine also accompanied Animae Gospel Choir in their latest venture to Assisi Italy in November 2012 where the choir attended a Gospel Singing experience entitled “Gospel Connection”. Nadine’s next experience offshore will be in September 2013 whereby she will be performing together with Trania in the music and art forum 'Without Borders’.

Nadine ventured into the American standards and jazz scene at a later stage in her musical career. She contributed to the very successful concert and CD launch of “The Beatles Works” interpreting in an acclaimed manner, songs by the famous fab four, arranged in a jazzy style. Here she worked with local jazz musicians namely Vinny Vella Jnr, Walter Vella, Noel Grech and Mario Cocker Aquilina.

Nadine is very much in request for live performances with various jazz bands. Nadine performed twice in the Malta Jazz Festival, namely in 2008 and 2011. She is currently working on her jazz album, consisting of original compositions and collaborating with numerous renowned musicians in this sector. The album will be launched early in 2014.
