Mro. Lorenzo Gatt

Mro. Lorenzo Gatt was the fifth bandmaster who had the Każin San Ġiużepp, Banda De Rohan over the years has been in place since 1860. This clever Maestro was born in Ħaż-Żebbuġ on 18 September, 1856.

Lorenzo Gatt was born and raised in a family where music was something sacred, they could not fail to early childhood was inclined to musical art as was his father Ġianpatist. Lorenzo Gatt began his musical studies at a young age under his father and continued this teaching under other conductors. For 14 years, was Ġianpatist musician and organist of the Cathedral of Mdina within the Maestro di Cappella Vincenzo Bugeja. Father of Lorenzo, Ġianpatist died when he was only 20 years old, it was in 1876. That year the time Lorenzo had been studying so much to need his father to help his studies.

The Cathedral Chapter was well aware what translates Lorenzo, who was still young at 20 years. Thus encouraged Lorenzo to take his father's work. Although small refused to give up. Lodged an appeal to the Archbishop of that time Mgr. Gaetano Pace Fornu to occupy his father's place.

As Director of Bands in 1888 is found for the first time with the Għaqda Mużikali L'Isle Adam at Rabat. Dam directing to this band for five years. In year 1892 he was appointed headmaster and director of Banda De Rohan ran occupy this post until the year 1900. As a composer too was known for his music. He has written many sacred music for organ and orchestra. Among his great work we find the De Requiem Mass Great, Diesirae, Rex Tremende Maestatis, Reġina Coeli and Sancte Paule, A Cinque Party and others. In the Sacred Music Maestro Gatt also wrote sinfoniji, marches and anthems. Most of his music is in the archive of the Museum.

The conductor Lorenzo Gatt died on 9 May 1926 at his home, Victoria.
