Mro.Antonio Agius

Mro. Antonio Agius son of Mro. Epifanio Agius son and Anna Spiteri was born in Rabat on 6 January 1849 and baptized the following day in Proto Parish Church of St. Paul. The priest was Vincent Magri while parrini were Francis Agius Mary Francis Spiteri daughter dead. Were granted the names of Antonio, Ġiovanni Maria, Joseph and Francis.

The Maestro Antonio was coming from a family of musicians and first education in music from his father Hatha area likely to Epifanio. Towards the end of the nineteenth century we find the Antonio Pinto Band Club of Ħal-Qormi bandmaster, and Soċjeta Filamonika La Stella Band Club of Victoria, Gozo and Għaqda Mużikali San Mikiel, of Ħaż-Żabbar.

In 1893 he wrote National Anthem to the club too. This enemy Anthem played today. The words in Italian was made by the Rector of the Grotto of Saint Paul, the Canon Collegiate Ġio Batta Micallef and later was converted to a Dun Frans Camilleri to Maltese.

In 1902 reached musical director of the band club which lasted until 1920. Figure out which hands under the band has made great progress. It was be invited by the Governor to Leslie Rundle used to play in both Palaces of San Anton and Buskett. The band was also invited to many of Malta holidays.

Among the works of this Maestro are: Great Hymn to the winners of the 1565 and Vescovili Hymn of writing in 1915 for the occasion of the Ingress of Bishop Mauro Caruana. This hymn was play by the same band club which was accompanied by a choir to sing this hymn. Also wrote polka L'Amicizia.

Antonio Agius died on 28 January 1934 and his funeral was accompanied by band club. Is buried in grave number one in Karnierja of the Oratory of St. Joseph, Rabat.
