Dr. Michael Spagnol was born on 21 June, 1985. He comes from Iż-Żejtun.

He studied Maltese and Linguistics at the University of Malta, completed his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Konstanz, Germany, and did a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology ta’ Leipzig, Germany.

His fields of specialisation are morphology, lexicography and dialectology. He works on a number of research projects on terminology, dialects, and oral traditions.

He participated in numerous international conferences, and published many papers in peer-reviewed publications. He is currently Head of the Department of Maltese (2019-).

He was a member of the National Council for the Maltese Language (2013-2016), and since 2013 he chairs the terminological committee within the same Council. In January 2013 he started the Facebook page Kelma Kelma, and for some years he was one of the organisers of the concerts Kelma Kelma Nota Nota.
