The Malta Hit Song Contest, produced by Deo Grech and Ray Falzon on behalf of Why Events, was being aired on One TV over the last few months. The festival formed an integral part of the popular Sunday afternoon show, Celebrity Sundays. The final was held last Sunday.

The judges for the final included Mark Andrews (music critic, UK), Michael Bugeja (Music critic – Times of Malta), Lito (DJ on Capital Radio), Norman Cristina (musician, Malta) and Mary Rose Mallia (popular singer, Malta).

ONE TV will air a special edition of the highly popular Celebrity Sundays at 8.45pm. The show will include the finals of the Malta Hit Song Contest 2008. Celebrity Sundays, which ranked as the top Sunday afternoon show, according to the official MBA survey, comes to an end tomorrow.

Twenty entries qualified for the Malta Hit Song Contest, out of which only 11 made it to the final round. Five entries qualified from the judges’ round, while another six entries got their second chance through SMS voting.

[Deo Grech]] will host the show which is produced by Ray Falzon and Deo Grech on behalf of Why Events. Alexandra Vella will keep track of the votes. A fashion show will be included, featuring creations by Fiona from Creatrix together with David & Alex (Cut Couffier).

Other special guests include Mary Rose Mallia, Manuel Xuereb from Showtime and dancers from Dancel – choreography by Celaine Buhagiar.

Seven music experts will choose the winning entry while SMS voting will determine the special Televoting Prize.

The Gozitan singer Miriam Christine won the first edition of the Malta Hit Song Contest 2008 with the song Alone Today which she wrote herself.

Jessica Muscat came in second place with her entry Sweet Temptation written by Gerard James Borg and composed by Philip Vella.

Talitha Dimech came in third place with the entry, Encore written by Rita Pace and composed by Philip Vella. This song also won the SMS Voting Award as it was the song which achieved the highest number of SMS votes.

Encore obtained 1,964 votes – 23.7% of the 8,298 votes cast from 3 February till 1 July.
