Songwriters for this contest can be of any nationality, however, the singer/s have to be of Maltese nationality or hold dual citizenship. Gianluca Bezzina , winner of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2013, is not permitted to defend his title. Singers were allowed perform up to two songs for qualifying round of the competition.

PBS the Maltese broadcaster responsible for the nation's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, have published the regulations for the selection of their entry for 2014. 20 songs will be initially performed in a qualifying round on a live television show early next year, with 14 of them going through to the national final.

Authors and composers, who can be of any nationality, have until the end of October to submit their entries to PBS in Malta. The artist(s) however have to be of Maltese nationality or hold dual citizenship. One exception is Gianluca Bezzina , who as winner of the 2013 contest in Malta is not permitted to defend his title.

At the end of November, the 20 songs that have been selected will be announced. Any artist can perform up to two songs in this qualifying round of the competition.

The Judging
The semifinal and final sessions will be broadcast live on TVM. The hosts are Gianluca Bezzina and Ira Losco, both former Malta Eurovision Song Contest winners. Moira Delia will be providing links for the Red Carpet and backstage.

The songs will be judged in a live television show, in January or February 2014, by six judges, and televoting will make up the votes of a seventh judge. 14 songs will then progress forward to the final. Artists however will only be allowed to perform one song in the final.
The winner of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014 will become Malta's entry to the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark between 6 and 10 May.

In the live final, the winning song will also be determined by the votes of six judges and televoting will make the votes of a seventh judge, In the event of a tie, the votes of the judges (therefore excluding televoting) will be used to ascertain the order of tied songs.

The winning song will go forward to represent Malta in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen.
14 out of these 20 songs will be selected to compete during the final night on 8 February 2014.

History
Judging
Malta have yet to win Europe's Favourite TV show since their debut in 1971, though they have come close on several occasions, finishing as runners up in 2002 and 2005, and in third place in 1992 and 1998. Last year Gianluca finished in eighth place in the Grand Final with the song Tomorrow for the island nation.
During the semifinal, the songs proceeding to the final will be selected by six judges; televoting will make up the votes of a seventh judge. 14 songs will then progress forward to the final. Singers will only be allowed to perform one song in the final.

In the live final, the winning song will also be determined by the votes of six judges and televoting will make the votes of a seventh judge, In the event of a tie, the votes of the judges (therefore excluding televoting) will be used to ascertain the order of tied songs.

Malta – PBS has confirmed that it will be participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, hoping to capitalize on the great 2013 result. With a second qualification to the final in a row, Malta also finished 8th, a first top 10 finish since Chiara finished second in 2005. Therefore, PBS also confirmed a national final similar to the 2013 one.
The winning song will represent Malta at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen.

Just like Estonia’s participation, Malta’s has been confirmed from PBS to Esctoday. So it’s still not an official release statement but PBS seems certain to take part in the upcoming edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, to be held in Denmark in 2014.

It seems that Malta’s Song for Europe is as old as Malta’s participation in the contest. Malta has always had a national final, since it returned to the contest in 1991! It however changed a lot in rules through the years and so far PBS made no statement on the 2014 edition but only confirmed its existence.

Thanks to the possibility to sing in English, Malta’s first form was no less than excellent, finishing in the top 10 in every year it parcipated from its 1991 return all the way until 1998 included. Through that time, Malta managed to even come twice third (1992 and 1998). Malta also finished second twice, in 2002 and 2005. But after coming last in the 2006 edition, the country lost momentum and waited for Chiara in 2009 to return to the final, where they also qualified in 2012, both having poor results in the final. Last year however, Gianluca helped the country finishing 8th with “Tomorrow”.
Guest performers
Malta joins Estonia, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Albania, Iceland, Ireland, San Marino, Georgia and Belgium who all confirmed their participation at the forthcoming contest next year. Who do you want to see represent Malta? What are your recommendations on the next Song for Europe?
Gaia Cauchi, winner of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2013, will be joined by a Choir from the La Voix Academy Choir, under the vocal direction of Gillian Attard. Other guests are still to be confirmed.
