Songwriters for this contest can be of any nationality, however, the singer/s have to be of Maltese nationality or hold dual citizenship. Gianluca Bezzina , winner of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2013, is not permitted to defend his title. Singers were allowed perform up to two songs for qualifying round of the competition.

A preliminary selection round determined the 20 songs to be performed at the semifinal on 7 February 2014, picked from all the submissions received before the end of October 2013. These were announced during a special edition of the popular TVM programme Xarabank at the end of November. 14 songs will be selected to compete during the final night on 8 February.

The Event

The semifinal and final sessions will be broadcast live on TVM. The hosts are Gianluca Bezzina and Ira Losco, both former Malta Eurovision Song Contest winners.

The winner of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2014 will become Malta's entry to the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark between 6 and 10 May.

In the live final, the winning song will also be determined by the votes of six judges and televoting will make the votes of a seventh judge, In the event of a tie, the votes of the judges (therefore excluding televoting) will be used to ascertain the order of tied songs.

The winning song will represent Malta at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen.

Guest performers

Gaia Cauchi, winner of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2013, will be joined by a Choir from the La Voix Academy, under the vocal direction of Gillian Attard. Other guests are still to be confirmed.
