Lara Refalo

Lara Refalo was born on 8 December, 1995. in Pietà. She currently lives with her family in Ħaż-Żabbar. As a secondary education, she used to attend Carlo Diacono College in Żejtun from where she continued her studies at Junior College which led her to the University of Malta where she is currently studying.

Her passion was always singing from a very young age so much so that she used to create melody by using objects found at home. Her parents were the first to get to know about Lara’s passion.

In fact, at the age of six, Lara started attending singing lessons at Natasha Grima. She continued her passion with Beatrice Brockdorff from the age of nine till the age of sixteen, focusing more on classical music. Ever since, she continued singing at the The Voice Academy Malta, directed by Ivan Degabriele where she is focusing on different genres such as pop and jazz.

Lara admits that musicals are my favourite as one can experience different voices along with dancing and drama which I love so much. When she was still at the secondary college, Lara used to take part in the school’s choir in the yearly pantomime. She also had the opportunity to participate and be the main role in two musicals: ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Monsieur Jourdain’. She also attended Masquerade school, studying voice, dancing and drama and passed all exams with the Trinity London College as well!”

Despite participating in school events, Lara participates in local concerts as well which all helped her in achieving more self-confidence and succeeded a lot. Her first experience in concerts was in 2006 at the Manoel Theatre where she had a role in This Thing Called Love. In 2009, she participated in the Rock Opera Ġensna and a year after, she participated in the choir which welcome Pope Benedict XVI in Malta. In addition, she participated in a musical by De La Salle College where she had the opportunity to sing musical songs which were sang in the Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables amongst other musical songs.

The first festival which Lara Refalo participated in was in 2015 at Saint Vincent De Paule, directed by J & A Productions. Lara’s comments were: I was very afraid but the experience was excellent. I participated by I Dreamed a Dream, a song from the musical Les Misérables ,where I placed second. She continued participating in many festivals ever since apart from the ones which she had to refuse due to University commitments.

On October 29, 2017, she participated in the contest Shine Singer Festival held by DBS Productions at the Saint Benedict School in Ħal-Kirkop. She participated with two songs: I Dreamed a Dream where she placed second and The girl in 14G where she placed first. In the mentioned contest, Lara won the Best Voice Award as well as the Grand Prix. During the same year, she had the opportunity to sing along with the Maria Mater Gratiae society philharmonic band in Żabbar.

Back in 2014, Lara had the opportunity to visit London’s BIMM (British and Irish Modern Music) where there she observed how students learn music. Moreover, Lara had the opportunity to sing with a local band at the same school.

Lara has had no opportunities to participate in concerts/ festivals abroad, however, she is aiming to do so in the near future: to visit different countries and gain more self-confidence along with strengthening her voice.

She is currently in her third year of studies, out of four years, which will lead her to Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Nutrition, Family and Consumer studies. Her wish is to strengthen her voice abroad and participants in local and foreign music festivals.

In the coming months, Lara will be working on her first music video as well as introducing an original song, however she would like to keep everything as a surprise!
