Launching the 39th Edition of the L-Għanja tal-Poplu, 2015

L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2015

On Thursday 15 January, 2015. Dr. Toni Sant director of the Center for Creativity of St James launched the 39 th Edition of the L-Għanja tal-Poplu, 2015, which will be held on Saturday 21 March 2015, Sir Temi Zammit Theatre at the University of Malta. Dr Toni Sant said that the Centre of Creativity will start work with the organizing committee of the L-Għanja tal-Poplu to the Festival continues to flourish and to promote Maltese song.

On this occasion attended the Chairman of the Valletta 2018 Foundation Mr. Jason Micallef, announced that L-Għanja tal-Poplu will be an integral part of the activities of Valletta 2018. As Chairman of One is said to have been satisfaction for him that the last five years helped this festival by broadcast on TV One, even live. Although it has always been of the opinion that L-Għanja tal-Poplu should be on the National station.

In the evening, Mr Charles Schembri chairman of the committee l-Għanja tal-Poplu thanked Dr. Toni Sant, and Mr Jason Micallef, as well as the Malta Arts Fund are helping this Festival, and Mr. Tonio Portugese Chairman of PBS pleased to resume broadcasting l-Għanja tal-Poplu on the National media. This will be done both through a television broadcast of the Festival on 1 April, as well as program Live weekly program on Radio Malta 2.

Last but not least Mr. Schembri thanked composers, authors, and musicians singersi with their collective work uploaded this festival. The songs for the festival this year will meet on Friday 23 January, at YTC at Valletta. Speak also Mr.Tony Micallef about his experience in media and as a follower of L-Għanja tal-Poplu and as media cordinator about how would work this year.

The evening opened with singing of Karen Debattista that sang the song 'Jien Ma’ Naħdimx’, the winning song L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2014. After Frank O'Neil accompanied by Christabelle Curmi and Lajks group performed some songs from past Għanja tal-Poplu editions.

The Poster

The poster for this year 2015 was designed by Jimmy Grima is a scene from Valletta, the place where it started the festival, and from which today, still meet the committee at YTC Merchants Street.

The boat symbolizes the progress made from year to year where the committee always work, and hear criticism and suggestions of everyone, to improve on the right to make every year. The musician symbolizes the importance of live music during the festival. The color red symbolizes the blood boiling for Maltese song, that in three minutes, you are able to describe history, arousing emotion, and enjoy with the melody!

Submissions

For festival L-Għanja tal-Poplu, to submit one song, need not enter into cost of recording studio. Can record the voice accompanied by a live instrument. If the recording is clear, need not be recording studio to be heard in the knockout. This one does not enter in to extra costs. If the song then proceed to the finals, has done recording. Application is only 25ewro and you then receive 2 tickets for the final night free each application.

Submissions for the festival L-Għanja tal-Poplu will be collected on Friday 23 January at YTC Merchants Street Valletta. • morning between 10 30am and 11 45am and • evening between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm. At YTC, 227 Merchants Street, Valletta. (Side church of St James)

The number of songs presented to L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2015 is on the hundred. Meanwhile the selection of finalists will be held in two phases.

Participants placing first, second and third will be receiving trophies and a reward of € 1000, € 600 and € 400 respectively. The person or group awarded the title of best singer-songwriter will be awarded a trophy and € 500. The author and composer of the winning song of L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2015 also granted the trophy L-Għanja tal-Poplu held up edition of the festival after.

The Awards also include

• Trophy to the author of the best social theme song, Trophy to the singer / or group best interpretation, Trophy for the best young talent.

105 song were submitted for consideration in the preliminary round. On Saturday 24 January, 2015 a panel of 5 judges selected 35 songs for the first phase of the preliminary round. jury members were: Michael Bugeja, Dorothy Bezzina, Justin Galea, Charles Flores, and Mro.George Debono.

Second Phase

On Saturday 31 January, 2015. finalists were selected songs will be sung and accompanied live on the final night of the 2015 l-Għanja tal-Poplu (39th Edition) Saturday 21 March 2015 Sir Theatre Temi Zammit University. Altogether there was 105 entered song which the jury chose 35 in the frist phase, today had chosen the sixteen songs for Final for this year.

At this stage the authors and composers will confirm who will sing live and who will accompany the songs that passed in the final days close.

The jury members were: Vince Fabri, Walter Micallef, and Profs.Manwel Mifsud.

On Friday 13 Febuary, 2015 was annouced the singers that would singer the songs at the L-Għanja tal-Poplu 2015.

Special guests

The interval act as people awaited the final results was offered by a flamenco dance group known as Alegria Dance Company and the finalists themselves who performed a great medley of well known Maltese songs.

The committee has always been proud to recognise the talent of local artists and therefore, a special award L-Għanja li Tibqa was given to Philip Vella, and give the audence the twelve songs that he take part during the years in the L-Għanja tal-Poplu.

Presentation

Dr.Toni Sant the chairman of St James Cavalier for Creativity presented the trophies to the winners. with Albert Marshall Chairman of the Malta Arts Fund and Mr Jason Micallef Chairman of Valletta 18 present the trophies to the first three places together with Mr. Carmelo Schembri chairperson of the Festival.

This edition was organised with support from the Malta Arts Fund and in collaboration with Valletta 18.

A CD compilation containing the songs from the final was produced for radio stations by Tony Micallef who wil be also the media cordinator for others media stations.
