L-Aħwa is a vocal music group from Malta. And all comes from Qrendi.

They are all members of the Bezzina Family: A teacher, an architect, a doctor, a soon-to-be medical physicist, and another three students of engineering, architecture and sciences – all in one large musical family. L-Aħwa, as the name itself suggests, is made up of seven siblings: Dorothy Bezzina, Samaria Bezzina, Gianluca Bezzina, Paul Bezzina, Joseph Bezzina, Vincienne Bezzina and Francesca Bezzina who, aside from their different professions, all share a common passion for music.

Dorothy is a familiar face in the local scene, having given solo performances in various concerts, including annual and private events with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, recitals and musico-literary evenings across theatres and other distinguished venues both locally and internationally. She trains under established pianist Rosetta De Battista, and Soprano Miriam Cauchi, and has also been selected as a finalist in several editions of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.

Samaria is an accomplished dancer specialising in hip-hop. She is part of the Southville Crew, a group of dynamic and dedicated dancers who have been performing regularly, both locally as well as overseas in several competitions and workshops. She has also been active in the local musical theatre scene and in 2013 accompanied Gianluca as a backing vocalist during his participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Gianluca has warmed the hearts of many Eurovision enthusiasts during the 2013 edition in Malmö, where he represented Malta with the song ‘Tomorrow’, earning 8th place out of 39 countries in the Grand Final. The song made it to the BBC UK Official charts and also reached Top 50 and Top 100 positions in the Dutch, Irish and Belgian official singles charts. Following his Eurovision experience and solo album release, Waiting for Tomorrow, he was nominated for Best Solo Artist and Best Music Video in the 2013 Malta Music Awards. Gianluca has also performed alongside other established artists in various national events, including the Joseph Calleja Concert in 2013 and Isle of MTV during the same year as a soloist and in 2014 with his band Funk Initiative.

Paul and Joseph enjoy spending time together during their regular jamming sessions. They are both equally talented guitarists, while Joseph is also a drummer. Apart from working on their own material, which is highly influenced by alternative rock, blues and indie folk, they also perform in live gigs and private events, and have recently featured in Gianluca’s latest music video, Picture.

Vincienne and Francesca, the youngest of the clan, have also developed a penchant for music. Both sisters play the piano, while Francesca also plays the guitar and studies the violoncello at the Johann Strauss School of Music with Simon Abdilla Joslin, and classical singing under Soprano Karmena Radovska.

Growing up in a musical family, with both parents being musicians in their own right, all siblings have naturally sought a unifying force through their music and have enjoyed several performing opportunities together. Their musical calling, however, also comes from beyond their immediate family. The siblings’ maternal grandfather, Gaetano Buttigieg, greatly contributed to the scene of popular song in Maltese during the fifties and sixties, and is considered one of its pioneers. In March 2014, l-Aħwa produced a live tribute concert in honour of his legacy.

Following the concert’s success, the Bezzina siblings worked alongside Kelma Kelma and Big Band Brothers during this year’s Kelma Kelma u Nota Nota, held as part of the Malta Arts Festival, with a re-run organised through the initiative of Arts Council Malta, in collaboration with the Culture Ministry, under the patronage of President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca. The concert, aimed at paying tribute to some of Malta’s distinguished authors, presented a series of traditional Maltese prose, poetry and songs to expose and highlight aspects of traditional Maltese culture in a contemporary approach.

This year has also seen the Bezzinas performing together as guest artists during the Malta Eurovision Song Contest Final last February, and also during this year’s Rockestra alongside the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, where they performed their version of Ho Hey by The Lumineers. Past opportunities also include a performance for HRH Prince Edward at an international forum held in Malta in 2012.
