Karen DeBattista

Karen DeBattista, was born on 8 May 1993. She’s from Mosta. She is currently studying Art & Design at MCAST. Introduced to music from a very young age, she started attending piano lessons at just 7 years.

Her very first experience at a large-scale concert was when she was asked to form part of the Joseph Calleja Children’s Choir in 2010. During that same concert, she was one of three soloists to have been chosen from the group of children to have been picked by Gillian Zammit.

From there onwards, she took part in a series of local competitions, kicking off with the Summer Hit Song Contest in 2010, before reaching the finals of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2013. Whilst not being an entirely new face to the local music scene, it seems that she will be following in the footsteps of Simone Gauci who came out of nowhere during the previous year to win Passport 2 Indifest beating jury favourite Marie Claire Attard Bason.

In an extraordinary turn-around, the professional jury put her in the first runner-up position finishing in the same slot for the second year running. It is worth noting that Marie Claire Attard Bason has already competed in the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza with the song Ma Rridx Ninbidel composed by Sean Vella to the lyrics of Rita Pace in a first time bid within the local music scene.

Karen DeBattista

Dak Li Għidtli Dakinħar, composed by Dominic Galea with lyrics by Joe Friggieri was the opening track of the competition with Karen DeBattista offering the viewers and the jury a much different rendition to what has become a true Nadine Axisa classic. On the other hand, Marie Claire Attard Bason followed with powerhouse vocals as she performed the song Intlaqt Mal-Mewġ composed by Mark Scicluna to the lyrics of Rita Pace.

Once more, she was definitely not challenging Janice Mangion, the original performer, giving her own spin to the track but the arrangement did not really suit the track itself in my opinion and thus left the audience yearning more. Regulations for this years' edition of the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza will be unveiled during the course of the week but nevertheless, songs for Karen Debattista will be put aside and listened to individually.

On 15 March, 2014 Karen take part in the 38th Edition of the Festival Għanja tal-Poplu and win the Festival with the song 'Jien ma Naħdimx' lyrics by Rita Pace and composor by Mark Scicluna.

On 21 November 2014, Karen DeBattista had the opportunity to compete as one of the 20 semi-finalists in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2015 with the song 12, Baker Street. Eventually, she got through to the final, held the following day on the 22 November 2014.

In 2016, Karen submit a song for the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2016, reaching the final and therefore joining the competition with Ħarstek, composed by Mark Scicluna with lyrics by Mark Amaira.

On 19 September, 2017 Karen taken part in Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2017 with the song Minn Wara l-Ħasira lyrics by Rita Pace and music by Mark Scicluna.

On 18 September, 2018 Karen taken part in Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2018 with the song Il-Bikja lyrics by herself and Emil Calleja Bayliss and music by Mark Scicluna.
