Joseph Aquilina

Joseph Aquilina was born on 25 October, 1963 at Ħ'Attard. He is a Tenor.

Commenced his vocal studies with Antoinette Miggiani and Blagovesta Dobreva`. Later he intensified his studies with Paul Asciak and Juliette Bisazza Zanni together with Master Classes in London and Milan. He was a finalist and a winner in Voice Competitions in Italy and Malta.

Gifted with a beautiful Lyrical Tenor voice, Aquilina has given creditable interpretations of various principle roles in the productions of Operas, Operettas and Musicals. These include Aleko (The Young Gypsy), Madama Butterfly (Pinkerton), Cavalleria Rusticana (Turiddu), The Merry Widow, La Principessa della Czarda, L’ Acqua Cheta, Il Paese dei Campanelli, and Chess. Other roles performed include those in the operas Otello (Cassio), Macbeth (Malcolm), Norma (Flavio), I Martri (Peralta), The Maltese Cross (Delegate) and Compostella (Pietro).

His concert appearances include the Malta Premier of Lloyd Webber’s Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Gounod’s Messa Solenne di S. Cecilia, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem, Hayden’s Paukenmesse, Creation and Missa Brevis, Frisina’s Apostlo Delle Genti, Dubois’s The Last Seven Words of Christ, Sammut’s Requiem, Vella’s Demm fuq il-Verna, Camilleri’s Dun Ġorġ, War Cantata and War Poems, Galea’s Laurenzios and Akathyistos, Agius’s Requiem, Sciberras’s Il-Għid ta’ l- Assunta – Lilek Marija, Attard’s Guzeppi ta’ Nazaret, among many others.

Joseph recorded works of Mro. John Galea Il Cuore di Cristo and its Maltese version Il-Qalb ta’ Kristu in the main studio of The Bulgarian National Radio together with The Sofia Collegium Symphony Orchestra of Bulgaria.

He also performed in Italy, Australia, South Africa and Poland.

During the Commonwealth Head of States meeting held in Malta in 2005, Joseph successfully performed concerts, ably supported by The Cyprus State Orchestra, for several high dignitaries from around the Commonwealth.

In October 2011, Joseph was one of the International Performing Artists making part of The Commonwealth Resounds! who successfully performed in several Concerts during the CHOGM, including the closing performance held in Perth’s St. Georges Cathedral, Australia.

Aquilina has several CD recordings released to his credit under International Record Labels Gega New and Balkan Multimedia Centre, which include works by leading Maltese composers, including: Nicolo` Isuard, Benignio Zerafa, Carlo Diacono, Giuseppe Spiteri Fremond, the Nani Family, Joseph Fenech, Pietro Paolo Bugeja, Francesco Azzopardi, Luigi Vella, John Galea, Joseph Vella, Raymond Sciberras, Charles Camilleri and Dominic Galea, amongst others.
