Joe S. Grech

Joe S. Grech, Maltese musician, composer, guitarist, bass player,and music producer.

Born on 17 December 1951, in Mellieħa. Joe is married to Elizabeth Grech, nee’ Bartolo known as Alice, and together they have two sons Julian Grech and Chris Grech, who are both musicans and form part of the Metal Bands Frenzy Mono and Nomad Son.

Studied the fret board at the age of 8 years, and at 12 years old ,studied guitar and the music history and theory, at a secondary School in Malta.

At 16 years old he studied classical guitar with Carmelo Muscat il-Captain.

He formed the Maltese Band New Cuorey, together with Sammy Bartolo, in 1967.

During this time ,together with Paul Abela who was then the organist for the band, Joe gained great experience, when they used to back International Cabert at Mellieħa Bay Hotel, in the 70,s.

In 1980,at the Verdala Hotel in Rabat, Malta, Joe joined the Oscar Lucas Band and backed The Bachelors and Mat Monroe, in Cabaret.

Joe composed the music of most of the songs for the late Sammy Bartolo together with Anthony Fenech who wrote the lyrics.

He travelled abroad on special venues with Maltese musicians, in Holland, England, Russia and Australia. Joe formed part of the orchestra in Malta when The Malta Song for Europe was held.

He was the guitarst in the orchestra in musicals: Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Annie, Les Miserables in concert, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Fiddler on the Roof, Godspell, and others under the direction of Mro. Paul Abela,and directed by Ray Mangion.

From time to time he plays bass guitar with Maltese local bands.

On 28 July 2016, Joe was invited and gave a special performance for Mellieħa Jum il-Kunsill. he formed a family band, consisting of his sons: Julian and Chris, on keyboards and Guitar, together with Alice Grech, Alexia Baldacchino and Jessica Aquilina,on vocals,they played songs from the New Cuorey repertoire, describing Mellieħa.

He produced 4 Cd albums to date, Sammy Bartolo, Il Bajja Tal-Mellieħa, the Captain Album, Joe S. Grech New Cuorey Instrumentals, and the recent album New Cuorey l-antiki.

Grech is an Honorary Member in The Maltese Irish Circle. Together with Mr. Micheal Higgins, who is the president for this society, they form part of a female choir. Grech is responsible for the musical arrangements, while Mr. Micheal Higgins directs the choir. From time to time this choir takes part in the society, venues.

Together with his wife Alice,they sing and play in the Malta hotels circuit, and special activities. They also played in venues in England and Romania, in 2014 and 2015.
