Fredu Spiteri l-Lavarist was a noted folksinger. Born on the 29th April 1930 in Rabat, Gozo, he is probably the most celebrated folksinger from the sister island. Known also as Tal-Pitrolju, since he was originally a paraffin vendor, Spiteri was known for his makjetti.

He lost his life tragically in a motorcycle accident in November 1965. There are two known ballads written about him, one sung by Mikiel Abela l-Bambinu and another by Fredu Cassar ta' Bakkar Omxot.
