Edwin Galea
Edwin Galea (born 7 October 1938) he was a singer, composer and musician from Malta.
Edwin's musical career started at the age of 7 years when he joined St George’s Band Club of Bormla (Cospicua) and later with the Maria Mater Gratia band of Ħaż-Żabbar playing the clarinet and saxophone. It was at the same time that he started studying the piano.
Edwin Galea sang for the first time at the Domus of Bormla at the age of 14, when he interpreting the immortal Granada in Spanish. He participated in several song festivals, and placed first in the first edition of Canzone d’Oggi 1960. He also played at the Premier and with the Oscar Lucas Band at Las Vegas Bar. After a few years, Edwin married Oscar Lucas's only daughter Vivienne. They had four children: Sonia Salerno who was also a singer for some years,Adrian Galea a well known drummer and singer too, Jason Galea who used to sing in festivals during his childhood and Daniela.
Edwin used to lead a band by the name of Edwin and his Rockers with Manuel Calleja, Alexander Grech, Freddie Zammit and singer Tony Agius.
Edwin was also part of the band Ekosonics during the sixties and seventies, which changed its name to Edwin Galea and his Ekosonics. The band was made up of Francis Farrugia on the Bass, Louis Piccione on the drums and Wilfred Buttigieg playing the guitar. Apart from many shows around Malta, the band was resident at The Caravelle in Qui-Si-Sana, Pharoah’s Den, The Salina Bay Hotel now The Coastline and later Corinthia Palace at Ħ'Attard.
In November 1970, Edwin represented Malta in the first edition of the World Popular Song Festival, in Tokyo at Japan and placing twelfth out of 44 participants from 37 different countries with the immortal song, lyrics by Vincent Zammit and music by Celemente Zammit Fejn Tidħol l-imħabba and won an outstanding performance award and a car too.
1976 was another successful year for Edwin Galea when he published another vinyl double a-side hit in Malta Ma’ Nibdlek Qatt and Malta Ġdida with lyrics by Manwel Haber and music by himself. The band which accompanied him in the recording was Edwin Galea & Melita Group and the sales topped the 26,000 copy mark.
In 1977 Edwin gave concerts for Maltese emigrants in Melbourne and Sydney. He also issued two cd’s Specjali Ghalik (1997) and Feelings has also composed several songs.
Nowadays, from time to time, Edwin composed songs for his niece Michela Galea, a promising singer and actress.
