Claudette Buttigieg (née Pace) is a Maltese singer born in Naxxar on 8 February 1968.

Representing Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest which was held in Stockholm during May 2000, Claudette Pace was chosen by the Maltese public with her song Desire. But before her performance on the Eurovision stage, Claudette had previous experience in the local music scene on the Maltese Islands.

Claudette Pace made her debut in the Malta Song For Europe in 1993 together with Bayzo with the song You Are My Music.

Claudette and Bayzo had to compete in the Malta national semi final first but unfortunately her first attempt to try and represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin ended there. But this was only the beginning for Claudette! Two years after her debut, she returned to the national final in 1995 but this time as a solo artist. Her song was called Our Love Could Never Be and with a surprising comeback, Claudette ended up second place. That same year, she won the Best Female Artist award at the Malta Music Awards 1995, an award that she had been nominated on a regular basis.

With a determination to represent her native country, she made another return in 1996 with her heartfelt song My Butterfly. Claudette stated that this song is her favourite entry that she has submitted throughout the years. Once again, she finished as the first runner up in the contest missing out on the golden ticket to represent Malta, against the winner Miriam Christine. Her next submission for the Malta Song for Europe was in 1997 with her song Love Can Do Miracles. After submission of this song, Claudette was the main favourite to win the right and represent Malta due to being the first runner up twice in a row.

Unfortunately all this was only just speculation as she only placed a joined 5th position but from a field of 16 participants. Claudette proved herself to be a worthy singer taking part in other local and international song festivals in between each Malta Song participation. In 1998, she returned to the stage but this time with a different kind of song that fans were expecting. This time she returned with a gospel tune together with 6th Above. Their song Listen to Our Voices proved another success for Claudette as she placed once again in the top 3, achieving third place. She went on releasing her album called Beginnings which was also nominated for Best Album at the Malta Music Awards that same year.

The 1999 Malta Song For Europe was the last submission before Claudette will achieve victory! She submitted her entry titled Breathless and was considered once again the favourite to win the contest. Although favourite to win, Claudette placed 5th losing out to Times Three who had represented Malta in Israel that year. The 2000 Malta Song for Europe was her winning year. But before knowing this, Claudette entered a Maltese festival which coincides with the Maltese Independence Day. She submitted the song Ejjew Nippruvaw (Come On Let’s Try) for the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza -1999 which eventually led up to winning this festival. For her next participation in the Malta Song For Europe, Claudette decided to team up with Philip Vella as a composer and Gerard James Borg as a lyricist. This duo doesn’t need an introduction to the Eurovision scene as they were the team behind a number of Maltese entries in the Eurovision Song Contest. Desire was the name of her next entry. This track had a fresh and Mediterranean feel to it and was different to what people were used to see from her on the Malta Song stage and even other performances.

After achieving another good result for Malta in Eurovision, 8th place with a total of 73 points, Claudette started to fade away from her music career but continued to progress as a TV presenter and also started some new ventures. Desire proved to be an instant hit and was chosen to be the official song for the 2001 UK gay pride event, where she also sang Power of Pink. Claudette continued to give live performances in Maltese festivals and guest star on Maltese TV programmes but hasn’t released any new material or albums in a long time.

One role which Claudette embraced was being part of the Maltese Delegation for the Eurovision Song Contest with the Public Broadcaster. In 2008, we had seen Claudette back in the final of the Malta Song For Europe. This time she wasn’t the singer but as a songwriter. She had written the lyrics for the song ‘Go’ which was performed by Klinsmann Coleiro together with the composition of Dominic Galea. A popular TV show that Claudette Pace hosted after her Eurovision participation was called L-isfida. This was a Maltese talent show that showcased new and upcoming artists in music, theater and also dancing. In 2010, the Maltese national broadcaster decided to hold six semi finals in order to choose the next Eurovision representative. Each semi final would consist of 6 songs and the public must vote for 2 qualifiers from each round in order to pass to the final night. Claudette’s new role in this process was to host each of these semi final rounds during her talent show which was being shown once a week.

As years go by, Claudette’s live performances have been decreasing unfortunately due to other commitments. She had retired from her television career in order to work as a Communications Coordinator with the Maltese Ministry of Health. After retiring from her full time job, Claudette returned to the TV presentation spotlight with the same Maltese broadcaster, as she continued to host a daytime television show which is quite popular on the Maltese Islands. The television show which goes by the name Selili was actually the show that 15 years ago launched her career as a TV presenter. The format of this show is mainly to broadcast and share on-going information and news in a discussion form together with a guest. One must note that due to her daytime program, it has become a policy to adapt a similar TV programme on each TV station.

Although Claudette is not fully involved in the music scene as she used to be, once she gives a live performance, her voice remains to be strong and powerful more than ever. In the recent weeks, Maltese readers of the ‘Gwida’ magazine have seen a section where Claudette answers personal letters for people who might have personal problems. Claudette also recently announced that she will be part of the next Maltese elections and due to this career move she has to stop hosting her daytime program. Fans often wonder what will be next step for Claudette Pace and one is always left wondering since she likes to surprise us all with her next venture. Another participation in the Malta Song For Europe was never ruled out, so only time will tell what Desire Claudette Pace will prepare for us!

Claudette Buttigieg contested the General Election 2013 and was elected to the Maltese Parliament from the 8th electoral district.
