He grew accustomed to ''għana'' through the One TV programmes and the Argotti Festival and began creating rhyme at the age of ten. Despite all the modern foreign musical genres he was committed to tradition, egged on by another young fellow Naxxar folk singer, Etienne Pawney. His first singing bout was at the private residence of Pawney's aunt in Bormla, where he paired with her brother Jimmy Pawney ta' Bormla.
