Charles Thake

Charles Thake (21 December 1927 - 12 May 2018) was an actor born in Senglea and known mainly for comic parts and for interpreting theatrical performances, as well as on television and radio.

Acting Career

Charles started his acting career aged 15 in a school production of Romeo and Juliet. In 1947 he started acting with Maleth and in British Institute productions. He underwent an intensive acting course at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He went on to appear in numerous plays produced by Maleth, Atturi Theatre Group and MADC. He took part in various television series on Maltese TV including Nhar it-Tieġ , Inkwiet and F’Baħar Wieħed, the first Maltese language television series, which broadcast on Television Malta. He also produced several TV series.

Personal Life

Charles joined the civil service as a clerk typist and in 1952 was appointed welfare officer, a position he occupied for 33 years.

Charles married Lina on 2 August 1953 at St. Ignatius Church in St. Julian's and was father of six children and many nephews. Lina died on 15 January 2017 at the age of 85.

He was also popular among the Maltese community in Australia, whom he visited in 1982. He helped the missions in Guatemala.

As a retiree, he helped in the archives department of Public Broadcasting Services, where he identified the films to help broadcast the film and television heritage for future generations. Charles was awarded the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika (Medal for Service to the Republic) on 13 December 2001.

Charles passed away on 12 May 2018 aged 91. His funeral mass was celebrated on Wednesday 16 May 2018 at the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy, San Pawl tat-Tarġa, [Naxxar].
